Phil Gould has a huge job to do at Canterbury and it appears that he is in for the long haul. Details of Gould’s contract with the Bulldogs have been kept quiet but Sport Confidential can reveal the deal is loaded with triggers that could see the rugby league savant staying at Canterbury for six years or longer.

It means Gould will be given the time and space to turn around his old club’s dwindling fortunes. He may need it. Take a peak under the salary cap bonnet at the Bulldogs and it isn’t pretty.

The club’s roster is badly bent out of shape. Remarkably, there is not a spine player among the five highest-paid at the club. Instead, that money has been used on the likes of Tevita Pangai Jr, Nick Cotric, Josh Jackson, Josh Addo-Carr and Luke Thompson.

It has left the Dogs dangerously short of players capable of leading the side around the park. Matt Burton will be a welcome addition next season but Gould has been working the phones and his contacts to try to put the club in position to strike when November 1 arrives and clubs are free to sign players entering the last year of their contracts.

Gould was lambasted over claims he arrived at Penrith with a five-year plan.

He himself has called those comments media gibberish and much of the Panthers’ good fortune in recent years can be put down to the work Gould did when he arrived at the club.

The Bulldogs are hoping he can have the same effect with them, although the task is more difficult given they don’t have the same junior numbers to rely upon. It means Gould’s contacts and ability to cut a deal will be even more important in the player market.

November 1 will be the first test of that ability.

Daily Telegraph always seem to have a stick up their arse in regards to Phil Gould.

Anyone know what the deal is there? Has Gould snubbed exclusives to them? Or maybe calling bullshit on their lies has their nose out of joint?
I would think it dates back to the Super League War with Daily Telegraph being News Ltd and Gould being pro-ARL

Nobody in the game made more enemies from Super League nor holds onto old Super League grudges like Gus.

Most of it begins and ends there, nearly 25 years and counting.

Api and Johnson were misses but I can't think off too many more that we could have had a crack at.

Unfortunately we had to pay overs to get decent players in and make the club more attractive.

It’s like we’re going around in circles. Apparently we had a war chest now salary cap issues again. No doubt we’ve overspent on same players though.

He’s mocked that flog Buzz Frothfield for ages and he works for the company. That’s why he always writes up dribble

Media is literally ridiculous.

They consistently make articles about how the Storm and Roosters are always under the cap when it becomes suspicious but the moment the 'Dogs sign a few players it's back to good old their cap is absolutely broken again.

The day the media can be held accountable for all their actions monetarily will be the day the NRL has any sort of integrity

Calm down people we dont have many players on the books for 23-24, Signed 10 recruits for 2022 and people on here are having a whinge? Name the key spine players who arent washed/nearing the end of their careers that were available to sign?

“there is not a spine player among the five highest-paid at the club”

Easy fix, give Burton a pay rise, bingo problem solved, we now have a spine player in the 5 highest paid.

FMD that is one of the stupidest comments I have ever seen. The farkwit is whinging because we got the best 5/8 prospect for decades at a bargain price. Surely that’s a good thing, rather than overpaying for a spine flogs like other clubs have. The stupidly overpaid spine list is endless, Hunt, Moses, Mbye, Milford, Pearce, Brooks, etc.

How will increasing Burton’s salary upgrade the rest of the spine?

Think he used to write a column in the SMH so being a rival paper could have something to do with it. Not sure if he was offered anything by DT, that and as mentioned already sticking with ARL back in the Super league era

It’s incredible to think there are so many on here who believe this dribble, firstly we had the opportunity to get rid of thommo, even though we were asked to pay half,if memory serves me right, there are 17 or so players that have departed our club that’s more than half of our roster, news Ltd have had an axe to grind with us for a long time, they love to put out the bad publicity on us they thrive on it
