Shots have been fired at a Sydney prison after staff thought they had released the wrong inmate.
Staff reportedly panicked soon after releasing a prisoner on parole at the Silverwater Correctional Complex in Sydney's West on Saturday.
But it turns out the correct inmate was released, but with the wrong paperwork,
7 News reported. Police launched a 'manhunt' for the escapee after he ran out of the complex after questioning.
Corrective Services New South Wales told Daily Mail Australia a security guard fired the warning shot into the ground after the 'offender' ran away following questioning.
'The inmate was due for release today but had the wrong documentation,' she said. 'The offender has now been apprehended and investigations are ongoing.'
A spokesperson for NSW Police confirmed they are assisting the Department with their investigation.
