Should we target Papenhauzen in 2022?

This kid will be a top 3 player soon. I’d have a crack. And storm still have Munster and Hughes who’d both be gun fullbacks if given a chance.

But I think storm love to work of the mentality of get the best 1, 6, 7, 9 possible. And fill around them. And without Hughes or Munster in the halves they’d really struggle with that ideology.

Not sure if Tedesco was either injured or just run down but a few fullbacks made him look mortal for the first time in 2-3 years.

I still think the Storm have the best spine in the competition, even after losing Cameron Smith.

100%. I rate Hughes highly but he's a fullback despite playing well at 7 and even though Grant is special, life will be harder at first receiver without Cam.

Wouldn't complain if we signed him. But I think the price tag might be prohibitive. I personally think playmaking fullbacks are very handy. But a hooker with the brains to spot defensive weaknesses and send the ball that way is invaluable. Would be looking at getting that first. I'm not even sure if B. Smith fits that description. Haven't seen a huge amount of Grant. He seems to be a ball of energy with good instinct. But whether he'll be as influential as C. Smith is yet to be seen.

Papenhauzen might be a luxury we can't afford.

Watched a replay of Nz v Tonga tonight. And b. Smith just ran a muck around the ruck 2 linebreaks a try, try assist was a weapon just like the all star games. Would be a good buy!

I think after the 2021 Season we will all be pleasantly surprised with Averillo as our Fullback. I think the kid has the goods and will be our long term number 1.

agreed... truly great management by the Storm when it comes to their team... 10 years ago they were busted breaching the salary cap, had their 07 and 09 premierships stripped and were reduced to playing the 2010 season for no competition points

in the ten seasons since, and despite losing great players, the Storm have won 3 premierships, 4 minor premierships, 2 further GF appearances, a couple preliminary final appearances and playing finals every season

and with the last of the Big 4 apparently leaving the Storm after 430 FG games, the Storm will still field a rep standard spine in 2021 with 2 of the 4 players being 22 years old and the other two in their primes at 26 years of age

the benchmark

Bellamy leaves next year (according to Bellamy), his influence shouldn't be ignored.

We have similar players who can be as good as him at FB etc Averillo, Fox
Hopefully Averillo finds his place in the position he has the skill just need to learn how to defend
Yeh pretty much. Defence is often the last thing juniors get good at when they hit fg. Tackling bigger, more skilled players in fg takes getting used to compared to junior grades

Agree with this.

Averillo with ball in hand has the skill and ability to play any position from 1-7. (He is a similar mould to Papps)

Unfortunately Averillo’s Defence is way below par though.

As much as the excitement is brewing amongst the fans. With signings and the feeling of hope which hasn’t been there for a few years.

People don’t like the word rebuild season. If ever the term rebuild can be used 2021 is the year for a Bulldog rebuild. I hope TBaz experiments a bit in 2021 to work out who is who so 2022 can be a real good season.

Averillo at fullback could be good if he is given the time to develop and encouraged to keep his confidence. Meaney is also a potential good option if he can work hard on his support play.

I think the 9 position is still the most important spot that needs filling. It’s so important that paying overs for a quality 9 is something I would almost encourage to make sure it happens.

I reckon if we snag a hooker, and still have cash to spend, get more depth in the forwards. We have depth in the backs, moreso in 2022.

In saying that they did cheat the cap and got away with it when they stockpiled Drinkwater, Hughes despite rival interest along with Papenhuyzen as they didn't know who they wanted to be FB... Like honestly how can you start the pre season over the cap when Slater and Hoffman just retired, no one even questioned it

Not sure if we could afford him, tbh.... and as good as he is, hooker is probably a bigger priority for us because we have options at fb.

Billy Slater could well take over as coach at some stage. But there is a conundrum. There have been good specialised coaches who do not make it as a head coach. Taylor is a classic example. Barrett may prove to be another (hopefully not). So time will tell for Slater and also depends on whether he is interested in the burden of head coach.

the good junior coaches focus on defence more than attack and the junior players are all upskilled compared to even 5 years ago these days.

Its good if they are improving defence for juniors, couple of years ago it was closer to touch footy, nobody tackled. But even so they don't get to practice tackling the big bodies that have better skills (like fends) until they hit at least reserve grade. A lot come straight from u21s though to fg. Especially in 2020 with no reserve grade
