Should airlines charge people per kg?

It’s that time of year when we book our holiday getaways etc..

The cost of an airline is directly related to fuel and weight / volume of its cargo so why don’t airlines charge people per kg? As part of the check-in you stand on the scales to validate the weight and if you tip over you pay a big $ penalty?

How many bigger women would claim to be 57kg when in fact they are 125kg?

I think it also should be discounted if your height to weight ratio is acceptable.. ie a 6 foot 6 bloke weighing 120kg has Overall less volume than a women 5 feet 2 inch woman weighing in at 120kg, ie short fat woman has less dense weight, more overall volume and be wider than tall. :grinning:

The short fellas ( <5feet 9 inches) that weigh 66kg would be flying everywhere getting cheap flights.. but they could also sit two to a seat being so weedy, maybe another better use of space

When we break it all down isn’t an airplane just another haulage carrier? Doesn’t a truck charge by weight? Volume?

disclaimer: I’m a big solid guy and happy to pay my fair share but shouldn’t big women with greater volume more cargo pay for it?

I reckon they should have to pay for an extra seat if that's what they take up.

they should have flat bench seats and the arm rests move side to side to make the seats bigger… as the move over a click depends how much of a wide load someone is. For each click wider (every 5cm) they tag you with a fee. Then they weigh you as well, the ratio of wide load to weight is the basis of a ticket price

I once flew Sydney to San Francisco next to a morbidly obese (i'm talking full American, probably 180+kg) woman who, to her credit, booked 2 seats. It actually gave me more space, because she only took up about 1.7 seats. But she did kind of repulse me. I can't recall if she tried to use the toilet or not.

I recently lost about 20kg after being fed up with being, well, fat. i was at the stage where a airline seat belt was getting snug at full extension, and it was like "fuck this: i don't want to be the guy with seatbelt extender". Plus i'm amazed at how much easier to is to use the plane dunnies after dropping the weight.

Sounds like a great idea, as long as the service aligns with the fair paid. Let's say someone is 20% larger/heavier than average then they pay 20% more, so their seat should be 20% larger, their luggage would be allowed to be 20% larger/heavier, they should get 20% larger meals and 20% larger drinks. That sounds fair.

Conversely someone is 20% smaller/lighter than average then they pay 20% less, so their seat should be 20% smaller, their luggage would be have to be 20% smaller/lighter, they should get 20% smaller meals and 20% smaller drinks. That's only fair right?

Airlines should have a seat at check-in like they do for carry on, sit in it and if your fat falls over the side of the armrest you must pay for 2 seats. Being fat is a choice.

Air Samoa tried this approach in 2013:
They went out of business in 2015.
Should’ve re-thought the inflight catering strategy :-):

Yes, they definitely should.

Not fair or nice to be smooshed by an obese whale who refuses to lose weight because they are too lazy

As I child I used to think fat people were going to explode so probably best to not even let them on just in case.

makes sense.. they weight is less dense and shifts around all the time. When they fart they have some real bass about it, sort of a like a band pass box. They don’t look like they are put together well, all over the place with every stride.

but airlines have a challenge on their hands… on smaller planes don’t they sit a big fatty on one side and everyone else on the other to balance the weight in the plane?

good theory but it should be like the lift… 1000kg total or 13 people.. so if someone exceeds the weight average they either bring on a undersize partner that levels up the equilibrium or they pay a premium.. so they also get two standard meals and they fight each other on how much each get.

It's the same when you go watch the footy or a concert. Having someone who's spilling over into your space sit next to you really blows.

Try sitting behind a 7 foot tall basketballer at a basket ball game :rage:

If it's medical then play on but other than that no real excuse to be so large that you impact on other people's comfort on public transport etc.
