When Sam Perrett was sitting at home watching the Roosters premiership triumph in last year’s grand final something just didn’t feel right.

Naturally, Perrett watched on with myriad emotions, knowing his close friends had achieved what they had long strived for, only for the long-term Rooster not to be part of it.

Perrett spent nine seasons at the Roosters before switching to Canterbury midway through 2012. While he went on to play in the grand final later that year, he didn’t get to experience the premiership success his former teammates did. It was his second grand final loss, having been part of the Roosters team beaten by St George Illawarra in 2010.

Perrett will play the Roosters on Friday night for the first time since their grand final win.

“It was some mixed emotions,” Perrett said. “I was really happy for the boys and in a way disappointed that I couldn’t have been part of it.

“I’ll never regret being here. I love this club and I’ve only got plans [to win a premiership] here.

“It was weird. Like I said mixed emotions. I was there for nine years and I was little bit bummed that during that time we couldn’t get to win. I was only happy for the boys and it gave me motivation for me to get my own bit of joy.”

Perrett remains close to many of his ex-teammates and said they hadn’t given him a hard time after beating Manly in last year’s decider.

“Nah the boys are pretty humble,” Perrett said. “I know they were really relieved and stoked when I spoke to them at the end of last year and so they should be.

“It’s going to be fun seeing all the boys. I love catching up with everyone and all the staff. Out on the field there is going to be that extra motivation to get stuck into each other like you do with your mates.”

Canterbury players hope last week's 40-12 win over Melbourne in Perth is what they needed to help kick-start their season after a lacklustre opening month.

Halfback Trent Hodkinson said he and halves partner Josh Reynolds faced a big task against the Roosters NSW scrum base duo of Mitchell Pearce and James Maloney.

“I think we are going OK,” Hodkinson said. “We did put a bit of pressure on ourselves to step up for the team and we are getting there. Hopefully again this week we can put in a good performance.

“I guess my running game has improved, my kicking game and overall fitness. My body is feeling good. It’s funny what a full pre-season does.”

Meanwhile, Canterbury captain Michael Ennis said his team had not discussed the reasoning behind Andrew Fifita’s decision to opt out of his four-year contract with the club.

The Bulldogs team were in Perth when Fifita suggested he wanted to switch to rugby union instead of joining Canterbury from next season before the deal was called off on Monday.

“We have stayed right out of it,” Ennis said. “We’ve let (chief executive) Raelene [Castle] handle it.

“[Fifita] is entitled to say how he feels and his opinions.”

In my opinion, I beleive sam is a proffesional athlete and his past experience with the roosters will most definately not hinder his performance. He is a top bloke and a man.

He's a solid bloke Sammy, can't help but like him.
Yep. The amount of shit he copped on here was unfair. I was sceptical that he would be a good fb but he is, solid all around. He is a minichello clone, and that's not a bad thing.

Rd 1 dramatics were out of hand, but good on him for rising above the fickled ones and proving to everyone he is a genuine option.

Another match up that I didn't even think of Sammy against Minichello - this is going to be good & tbh I think the boys will give it their all, this will come down to the wire & in the end I honestly believe the Dogs of war will rise.

I actually keep hoping for that. 10 year rematch in the making. Would be an awesome send off for SBW. Finishing his career losing to the greatest team.
