The current system does not work. There is no way every club complies with it and it seems that the only way a club gets caught is if their is a whistle blower. What kind of a system is that? Based on history, it will only be a matter of time before another club gets done in 3-4 years.

Why dont we have a points system instead? This has been mentioned before, but this was based on a panel determining points for each player which is way to subjective and arbitrary.

Instead of a panel, let the market determine the points for each player. The clubs all get a fixed number of points.

Lets say each team gets 100 points.

Each player that comes off contract has to go on the market with a chance for all clubs to bid for that player.

Before each team can bid for the player, they will see how many points they have left or will have in the coming year and how much they can bid for the player.

The player then HAS TO go to the team that has bid the highest. The player then gets paid a % of the salary cap based on how many points they were bought for.

This will give so much transperancy and it will truely result in an equal comp.

Thoughts?

If you dump the cap, i could only imagine how many teams would go broke. Teams like the Broncos, eels, us and maybe Panthers would dominate every year. It would be a pretty bad comp.

Introduce a points system where the market determines it.

Publicly publish the salaries. If players don't like it, too bad find another profession.

dump the salary cap and anyone who goes broke is removed from the competition

for example west tigers get eliminated then they give a new license to a perth team, or st george get eliminated then in comes a new brisbane team

if they know that they will be thrown out beforehand and then they still cant help themselves then why should they be not be punished?

that is just an excuse so they keep the cap going btw, the executives love the cap so they dont pay the players and they keep the money

Wouldn't mind that, they could do gf in Sydney or Brisbane each year and still sell out haha
As long as we don't get the same result as 1998 :(

Yup. The NRL needs to get rid of some teams and dumping the cap would be the best way to do so. Id love to see a promotion/relegation system of some sort. The A-league will probs be a better run nation wide comp within the next decade than the NRL could ever be.

There's the problem and a good argument for the cap.
Otherwise teams will roll the dice, overspend thinking they can win it
then ask the nrl to bail them out.

I think the salary cap with its sanctions works well .

They just need to blow the whistle earlier and do random assessments on clubs.

They could look at somehow controlling all payments to players ie club pays nrl, nrl pays players. Any declarable payments/gifts received outside the nrl payments can then not only result in club sanctions but also in unpaid player suspensions of 12 months for 1st offence. Spread the responsibility.

Next club to look at is The Broncos - they have 10 test players playing this week..

A 10 team comp, with no cap, would be infinitely better than the shit we watch every week.

The panel would be to controversial. There is no way they can be objective.

A player's market value is what a market is willing to pay, not what a panel thinks.

You are correct - the system is pretty much broken.

I'm in favour of removal of the cap, provided:

- Clubs have to be audited and show they are solvent each year as a condition of being able to have a licence.
- Before the cap is removed, the distribution if Clubs across markets is evened out. It is ridiculous Brisbane has more than 2 million people all to themselves in a Rugby League heartland.

Two options.

1. Get rid of the Salary Cap and introduce the EPL Homegrown rule with abit of a change.
Every club's Top 25 squad must contain 15-20 homegrown talent.
That will encourage every clubs junior system to grow. "Grassroots"

2. Keep Salary cap the way it is and allow two marquee players to get paid unlimited salary. No TPA's for two marquee players. Or if anyone else has an idea for TPA agreements, brainstorm them here.
