When you are in his situation in the 1st year of a contract, you want to lose as many as you can. They ain't gonnna sack you based upon the 1st year's performance and then assuming you do better in the 2nd year you can champion your improvement in the 2nd year compared to the 1st. Textbook coaching 101 stuff. Sheer incompetence aside, this is the only explanation I can come up with ....
