The Roosters have sacked Jayden Nikorima after the NRL handed him a 12-week suspension for failing a second drug test in 12 months.
The Australian reports Nikorima is searching for a new club and will come at a cheaper price with a lengthy suspension hanging over his head.
The 21-year-old's release frees up more cap space for the Rooosters just weeks after Mitchell Pearce's departure gave them bigger room to lure another big-name signing.
He had one year remaining on a $370,000 a year deal.
The Tricolours are now short for utility options with youngster Connor Watson also walking out the door to join Newcastle.
Promising NSW Cup star Nat Butcher has spent time playing hooker but has successfully made the transition to lock, while the club recently signed Lachlan Lam, son of Queensland great Adrian.
Nikorima turned down the opportunity to work under Cooper Cronk in Melbourne and will be snubbed of the chance again as the Queensland halfback begins pre-season training in the Eastern Suburbs.
He got his first shot in first grade in 2016 while Pearce served an eight-week suspension for his Australia Day incident.
The Queensland u18s and Australian Schoolboys representative managed to play seven games and score a try in his brief stint in first grade.
