GOLD Coast Suns mentor Rodney Eade has become the first AFL coach sacked this season.
The under-siege leader has confirmed his contract was terminated late Monday night and he will not coach in this weekend’s game against Brisbane.
Gold Coast CEO Mark Evans told Eade last night of the decision and was initially expecting the 59-year-old to see out the season. But Eade called Evans on Tuesday morning expressing his wish to be released immediately.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, Gold Coast chairman Tony Cochrane said the decision to sack Eade was made because the team’s results simply weren’t up to scratch.
“It’s simple, it’s wins and losses. We had a strong belief at the start of the year that we would challenge for the top eight this year, and we simply have failed,” Cochrane said.
“We’re simply in the same position as we were three years ago and that’s not good enough for our board.
“It doesn’t matter how you assess it, the wins-losses ratio is not what we want it to be, not even close.
“This is an industry, a sport judged by wins and losses ... we have to look to our future. We have to deliver better results, especially for our members, our supporters and our Gold Coast community.”
Evans said: “He (Eade) was very dignified last night but was obviously disappointed. He didn’t agree with the decision but accepted it.”
...
Can we get this guy to be our CEO/Chairman? Seriously, at least AFL is doing it right - you didn't get to where you thought you would be; in fact, you've gone backwards in terms of results and you're in an industry where winning is the number one priority. So what do you do? You do the normal thing and sack your coach because they're not delivering.
Not extend his contract by two years after a shaky win that leaves you in the shit you are now.
