We didnt fuck up anything. The surgeon is accountable, not us! It cost the club even more money to get the second opinion and further operations. So its definitely not on us.
Seriously, the rehab team could have easily gone for a second opinion after the first failed attempt at healing sans surgery. But they didn’t, they waited until the second attempt failed. It was an external that actually suggested a second opinion regarding the surgery option.

I know you think your a doctor, bit its very easy to criticise from the outside. The onus is on the doctor to get it right. End of story.

Stress fractures to the feet are ALWAYS tricky due to the limited blood flow to the body's extremities. It's a well known risk attempting natural heeling as a high % of cases go to bone grafts. For a professional athlete one attempt at natural healing should have been enough for them to realise it wasn't going to work and they should gone for the bone graft the second time around. Instead they had 2 goes at something that maybe wasn't the right choice the first time.

They should have gotten a second opinion from a second specialist, if not during the first attempt when it wasn’t healing (after 5 months) then absolutely in the second attempt when it wasn’t healing again (after another 5 months). For emphasis, we are not talking about it being unusual to need a bone graft, it’s actually quite common. This is not hindsight, it was totally predictable and standard practise with foot bone fractures. I am OK with giving natural healing a first try, but not going to another specialist before trying again was a mistake, our mistake, no one elses.

What part does the player/individual have in the process? It bodes well when we all play a proactive role in our health procedures and outcomes and seek 2nd opinions and trust our own gut instincts.

(This is no way a criticism of RFM ....who looks like he is set to come into his own now with our unstructured eyes up footy kinda play after he worked so well with Foran)

Boys allow me to input on this subject, you are both making good points but we can not place a blame on the club before we fully know all the details.
Importantly we need to make a decision to retain him or not and it has to be a fair one for both parties at that.

Hopefully he is fully recovered with no recurring problems going forward.

Not playing these past 2 seasons, yet being fully paid, has maybe lengthened his career so there's that kinda bonus for him to hold on to?

I agree but I have to admit I had doubts about his running ( sideways ) style that seems to have been corrected lately, potentially he can become a very high quality forward and is one of the very few off contract players I would like to keep !

I fully understand and agree with your sentiments, but some on TK were blaming RFM personally, saying cut him, he is injury prone, will never come back, made of glass, medically retire, blah blah blah. The fact is it was one injury, that was badly handled however you look at it, and not related to re occurring injuries that those sorts of comments should be limited to.

He has busted his gut to get back, loves playing footy, is a true Bulldog, he did everything that the medical and physio staff asked him to do and he shouldn't be disparaged because a hard to heal injury wasn't handled correctly.

Excellent point. The great Jack Gibson said that a player has a finite number of games in him not a finite number of seasons. Of course, nobody knows how many games that is until they play one too many.

Rugby league is one of the toughest body contact sports in the world and injuries should be accepted as part of it, although I've always thought his running game could better running more direct, he is a quality player unfortunately some fans would complain about winning the GF and some are so adamant their opinions are right a healthy conversation with them is out of the question, some get abusive thinking it is the way to get their point cross, loyalty is a two way street and if we are to get back to where we were we must harness these qualities.

I guess only the club and RFM can make that call too. My view is that RFM will want to stay, and the club will keep him, on a moderate contract. Guess we will see.
