Allowing for the fact we all assumed Flanagan was on the bench last night to give Reed a spell but didn’t (go figure), I really don’t get the criticism everyone gives Reed for his defence and missed tackles.
This year he’s making on average 42 tackles per game at 89.4% efficiency, so missing 4-5 tackles per game. Let’s look at some of the top tier hookers for comparison:
- Koroisau - 33 tackles per game at 88.2% efficiency, so missing 4-5 tackles per game
- Grant - 45 tackles per game at 91.7% efficiency, so missing 4-5 tackles per game
- Robson - 42 tackles per game at 93.2% efficiency, so missing 3-4 tackles per game
- Cook - 44 tackles per game at 95% efficiency, so missing 2-3 tackles per game
Who cares if he’s “missed more tackles than anyone else”? If you know anything at all about statistics, averages tell you way more than totals. When you consider that Reed is playing 80 minutes every week (rightly or wrongly) in a team that’s losing pretty often with a forward pack that’s been down on troops for most of the year, I’d say his defence is actually pretty damn good.
