BULLDOGS NSW Cup hooker Joel Romelo kept his cool to slot a match-winning field goal just seconds from full-time, denying the Newcastle Knights a remarkable comeback victory on Saturday.

Leading 26-0 after 20 minutes, the Bulldogs looked fearsome in front of their home fans, yet with moments left in regular time they needed Romelo’s boot to secure victory 37-36.

Two tries to Romelo, and four-pointers each for Tim Browne, Brett Lane and John Sila had the Dogs coasting early.

But with a cricket score looming, the Knights found hope after a surge reclaimed enough ground to take a 26-12 scoreline with them to the sheds.

Both sides traded tries in the second stanza until Knights speedster Kevin Naiqama picked up a misguided pass and ran 95m to score, locking the scorecard at 36-36, with 17 minutes left to play.

The match slipped into field goal mode with playmakers trading attempts at both ends of Belmore Sports Ground.

It was Romelo though who broke the deadlock from 25m out to secure the Dogs’ eighth win of the season.

The win maintained the Bulldogs at second position behind the North Sydney Bears on the VB NSW Cup ladder.

On Saturday the side will travel to Mt Pritchard Sports Ground to play Canberra Raiders feeder club Mounties.

They are 10th on the ladder and will be looking for redemption after a narrow loss to the Cup leaders.
