The NRL has surrendered to the AFL, allowing its rival to host an all Sydney semi-final match at ANZ Stadium on Saturday September 10, despite the Bulldogs having priority over the use of the Homebush venue.

The Bulldogs will now vacate their home ground to play at a neutral venue, Allianz Stadium, against the Panthers on the same Saturday if the final round NRL matches this weekend go as the NRL expects.

The NRL concede they agreed some weeks ago to vacate ANZ stadium should the Swans meet the Giants in the first weekend of AFL finals.

This is despite the Herald being told by the NRL over the weekend: "We expect to have priority for ANZ, given Dogs and NRL are partners of ANZ stadium. Sounds like AFL are going to move to the SCG anyhow. But we are just pushing along with as normal with our finals plans."

But this wouldn't have suited the AFL, which has invested over $100m in the Homebush-based Giants.

So, the minor premiership-winning Swans have to vacate their home ground, the SCG, to play a match against the fourth-placed Giants at ANZ, only a short walk from Spotless Stadium, the Giants' base.

"The AFL expect to get 70,000 to 80,000 out there at Homebush," the NRL spokesman said.

Asked why the NRL had given in to its rival when the Bulldogs had priority, the spokesman admitted NRL Central did not expect the all-Sydney AFL clash to eventuate.

"We spoke to them a few weeks ago and said that the Saturday was OK if the circumstances arose," he said.

The Bulldogs will be doubly punished if the results in the final NRL round see them forced to play on a Sunday, with star fullback Will Hopoate refusing to play on the Sabbath.

This is unlikely, given the Broncos have already been pencilled in for a Sunday home game, possibly against the Titans or Wests Tigers, given they can't play at Suncorp on the Saturday night because the Wallabies will be playing South Africa.

Rugby league, therefore, has been bumped off two home grounds by rival codes, should results go as the NRL anticipates.

An NRL spokesman insisted the semi-final scheduling, including Melbourne and Cronulla hosting home finals, possibly against the Cowboys and Raiders respectively, had not been locked in because "We don't know what the final order of teams will be."

The usual NRL protocol is for team 1 to play team 4 on the Friday night; teams 2 v 3 and 6 v 7 to play on Saturday, with 5 v 8 on Sunday.

What an absolute fuck around for both clubs. Swans should be playing at the SCG and us at ANZ.

Shift Bmoz to FB and Hoppa to right centre where he will partner Perrett.

Put Rona back at left centre outside JMoz where he is most effective.

Its not that hard.

This is absurd.. what happens to our so-called 'home ground advantage' for finishing 6th

You know NRL has problems when you have to vacate for the AFL.

And 70-80k for Swans/Giants? Bahahahaha that's a joke itself, Giants have no fans and Swans prefer SCG.

All about the money. This deal was brokered weeks ago under the assumption the ground would be free that day. Greenberg.

Swans v Giants will pull a bigger crowd. Just will. At least when the renos are finished in a few years, it will be a full time rectangular stadium so definitely no more AFL.

But why can't we just use the ground the next day (notwithstanding no Hoppa)?

THE AFL club that did its best to avoid ANZ Stadium is set to force out one of the venue’s longest-serving tenants for week one of the finals.

Canterbury are likely to kickstart their finals campaign at Allianz Stadium after confirmation the Sydney Swans will be forced to host the GWS Giants at ANZ Stadium on Saturday week.

Provided the Bulldogs finish fifth or sixth and earn the right to host an elimination final, they will need to play on a Saturday.

Unless North Queensland and Brisbane both lose at home against Gold Coast and Sydney Roosters respectively, Canterbury won’t sneak back into fourth place.

The Friday night game in week one of the finals is reserved for a top-four clash, ruling out the Bulldogs.

Canterbury will also be denied the chance to play on a Sunday afternoon because the Broncos will not have access to Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night.

The Wallabies and Springboks will play a Test at the venue on Saturday night.

Should there be no change to the NRL ladder, one solution would have been to move the Broncos to a Friday night and allow Canterbury to play on a Sunday afternoon.

Both clubs have huge fan bases and rate well on Channel 9. But the network has no say on the NRL finals scheduling.

And the NRL is aware handing Brisbane or Canterbury a Friday night game would give them an unfair extra 24 hours to recover for a game in week two against a team which finished higher than them on the ladder after 26 rounds.

A likely Saturday hitout will mean they retain the services of proud Mormon Will Hopoate.

It would be too expensive for the NRL to tentatively book ANZ Stadium for an entire weekend.

Only a month ago there was a chance no Sydney team would host a final in week one when Melbourne, Canberra, North Queensland and Brisbane were travelling well.

Should Cronulla host a final, there could be the chance for an Allianz Stadium double-header.

Penrith can leapfrog the Bulldogs into sixth but are resigned to playing their final at Allianz Stadium.

A Bulldogs final would pull in 20k - 35k. An all Sydney AFL final will pull in 60k-75k.

No surprise they went with the one that'll bring in more money.

I take that back. Just checked the tickets. ANZ has 80k capacity and there's only a couple of seats left.

An Allianz double header would be good for league fans I suppose.

But then again, the problem with double headers is that so many people only go to one game or the other.
