Canterbury have suffered two injury blows before a ball has even been kicked this NRL season, with new recruits Dene Halatau and Corey Payne to be sidelined for lengthy periods.

Backrower Payne is likely to require surgery and could be gone for the season after rupturing his left shoulder in last week's trial match against St George Illawarra.

New Zealand international Halatau picked up an ankle problem after being kicked against the Dragons, and is expected to miss the first two months of the competition.

Bulldogs assistant Terry Lamb said it was a terrible shame for both players, who were looking for new opportunities after joining from the Wests Tigers.

"They trained well, put in three or four months of hard training and get put out," Lamb said.

"But they'll be back, that's important for us.

"That's important for the future."

Any replacements named for these two?

I hope these two have their injury days behind them. Seems a shame. Sounds like Halatau was training the house down so it's a pity we'll have to wait to see how much impact he can make in the side.

Here are the words of Vince Lombardi,
an NFL legend, " I don't say these things
because I believe in the 'brutal' nature of
man or that men must be brutalized to be combative.
I believe in God and I believe in human decency.
But I firmly believe that any Man's finest hour,
the greatest fulfillment of all that He holds dear,
is that moment when He has worked His heart out
in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of
battle-victorious."

Well Paea hopefully can cover come onto the bench, and between Gordon and Warburton hopefully fill the void of Halatau. Maybe even Danny Williams will get a crack.

Payne I didn't think would be in first grade anyway this year much.
