WHO’S HOT
Mbye become’s Des’s top Dog
Des Hasler’s hand may have been forced by Moses Mbye’s form being as good as Trent Hodkinson’s has been bad.
But Des being Des, and wily as they come, there was plenty of method and not a whole lot of madness when he effectively gave Mbye the playmaking reins against the Dragons, giving the 21-year-old 80 minutes of game time while Hodkinson and Josh Reynolds both spent time on the bench.
His anointing of Mbye as the Dogs’ first choice half has been made with an eye to future, and not just because other clubs are clamouring for his services beyond 2016.
The general consensus in rugby league circles is the game has to, and will, reduce the number of interchanges over the next 12-24 months. With a forward pack comprised of man monsters and a game plan skewed heavily toward that, the Bulldogs shape as an obvious struggler under proposed changes which will aim to speed the game up.
Mbye, who combines a bit of Hodkinson’s organisational skills and kicking game with a more sizeable helping of Reynolds’ running game, looms as the type of player who will benefit most if there is a reduction in interchanges, whereas Hodkinson’s style is more suited to playing off the back of a big, rumbling forward pack.
Hasler was a step ahead of the rest when he first arrived at Belmore in 2012 when he turned some very big forwards into very handy playmakers, taking the Dogs from outside of the finals to a grand final appearance in 12 months.
With the NRL landscape set for another shake up, the nod of approval to Mbye suggests Hasler is again sniffing the winds and changing his approach accordingly.
