I always tell people in the city to leave the rats alone as theyre descendants of the first fleet.

Perfect example is Lowe Howe Island. They get on there, breed prolifically and completely trash the place. They've been reponsible for extinction of several plant/bird species already on Lord Howe.

As such they do 1080 bait droppings all over the island at least once a year and it completely wipes out the rat population (which bring disease with them).

One good thing about rats is it lead to the creation of the Jack Russell.

Such a cool breed of dog.
