Stand-in Bulldogs five-eighth Moses Mbye says while he was disappointed to miss the 17 for Round 1 he's more than happy with the fill-in role he plays at the club.

Mbye helped the Bulldogs to a 32-12 win over the injury-hit Eels on Friday night, including setting up the first try of the night with a cut-out pass to winger Curtis Rona.

The disappointment of missing the final 17 in Round 1 had already been tempered by Mbye's understanding that coach Des Hasler was always likely to go with four forward on the bench if possible.

"I sort of expected it, there's no point kicking stones –you can kick stones but it's not going to help your performance. I went out in Reggies [reserve grade] and ripped in, fate showed and I'm in the team this week. I’ll just keep plugging away and see what happens when [Reynolds is] back."

He said his job against the Eels was just to provide a little bit of direction, and help the side through its sets and get in a grind. "I think we achieved that and I'm really happy with the performance of the team," he added.

Mbye spent the entire off-season training with the first grade squad in the halves, preparing for an exact eventuality such as Reynolds' arm injury, and Mbye said the squad hadn't missed a beat despite also replacing fullback Sam Perrett with Brett Morris and hooker Michael Ennis with Michael Lichaa at the end of 2014.

"From the outside it looks like a new-look team but us boys have been together for years now. The day-in day-out pre seasons are gruelling, there's a lot of bonding in our team, we all get together often on weekends, we're a really tight-knit bunch of fellas. It's new on the outside but on the inside we know each other's games inside out," he said.

Of the uncertain nature of his reserve playmaker/utility role, Mbye said he can't see himself leaving the club in search of other opportunities any time soon.

"I'm happy at the club, in my eyes it's the best club in the NRL, they're awesome with my family, they've really looked after me since moving down from Queensland. Going forward this is a great family club, great morals and this is the club I want to be at for sure," he said.

"For now I am [happy filling in]. Definitely for now. In saying that, it's one of those things that can change overnight but for now I'm happy with what I'm doing."

It makes it even more important to take the opportunities when they present themselves, such as the one currently in front of him replacing Reynolds and the one he got to play in the 2014 Grand Final for the suspended Ennis.

"It's a good opportunity, these opportunities don't come around too often so when they do you have to be ready to take them with two hands and to have a go at it," he said.

"I was very lucky there to jump in for a grand final spot, blokes have been playing for 12-plus years and haven't played a grand final so I was lucky enough to play in a grand final. It wasn't the result we wanted but it was a great experience."

Sounds like a well brought up and polite young man. A credit to his family and the club.

very level head on his shoulders, has all the talent on the footy field and with reynolds still out for 3-4 weeks minimum I look forward to seeing what he has...

However lets not underestimate the impact josh reynolds has on our footy team. Last year with reynolds we won 68% of games without 44%

Mbye happy playing fill-in for now

Moses Mbye is currently enjoying an extended run at five-eighth for the injured Josh Reynolds.
Mbye is already playing better than Reynolds and will go better the more games he plays. IMO Reynolds should come back through the NSW Cup and earn his first grade position.

I hope he earns himself a spot in the starting 17. If this is Trents final year I hope he takes Trents position next year.

Great news. Hope Des looks after him and gives him the opportunity he deserves.
Both Des and Raelene have said numerous times that Mbye is a rare talent.

If he plays well enough while Reynolds is out, he should take some dislodging from the team. Make Reynolds earn his spot back, it will do him some good, might get him to pull his head in.

Needs to be the one of the starting halves for the rest of the year imo. Great left kicking game, neat grubbers, strong defender and very quick on his feet. Hope he has another great game on fri nyt!

I am no Reynolds hater like many on here, not mentioning any names,
But Reynolds is out for about 6 weeks,
That is a long time and we have some tough games to play in that time,
If Mbye is playing good consistent footy and we are in top 4 when Reynolds is back fit, I see no reason why Reynold should jump straight back into the team.
I think he should go back to NSW Cup until he proves himself the better candidate or there is an injury.

Same this as what happened to Hodkinson in 2012.

Great read and great attitude from Moses. This is the difference between a player like Moses and Sezer. Sezer thought he had the right to walk into a first grade side because a few people complimented him, Moses is willing to be developed properly.

I agree. In our next 5 games we verse Manly twice and the Rabbits once and Tigers once( who seem to be playing well)

If he can deliver good performances I don't see why he would be dropped automatically. Ultimately I don't care who plays there as long as they are winning games for us. Simples

Moses is humble and a gentleman by the sounds of it with a great attitude. Its nice to hear him respect and appreciate our club and culture instead of letting things go to his head and think they owe him or that he could do better elsewhere.Id really like to see him and reynolds together in halves as i think hodkinsons form is below par. That combination would give us some much needed spark.

Not many young footballers are willing to wait for their turn to play first grade and from all accounts Moses knows exactly what if means to have patience and respect for the decisions made by his coach. Others are correct in their assessment of Aiden Sezar who did think it was his right to walk straight into first grade at the expense of established players. this arrogance, I suppose you could call it and some behavioural problems were part of the reason he left, money also became a bargaining chip with the Tits offering a lot more and an indication that he would be playing first grade quite soon after he joined them.
