Newcastle Knights are set to throw outcast Willie Mason an NRL lifeline.

The maligned representative forward will undergo a medical test with the Knights on Tuesday in the final step to his return.

Mason simply needs to pass his medical examination to be registered with Wayne Bennett's side for the remainder of the year.

Mason, who left the NRL in 2010 to play in the English Super League and then French rugby, has been campaigning for a return and has now been given a late lifeline.

Bennett has always been a fan of Mason and is in desperate need of a prop to take some load off off-season recruit Kade Snowden.

Mason met with Bennett two months ago, but then agreed to join the Wests Tigers. However, after details of the negotiations were revealed, the Tigers board scuppered the move when sponsors threatened to walk away from the club due to Mason's controversial past.

Mason has since been training with sprint coach Roger Fabri and fitness guru Trent Langlands while seeking a deal with Newcastle or Penrith.

Bennett, frustrated by his side's lack of thrust up front, has pounced with a cut-price offer.

It's understood Mason will receive a minimal deal of about $40,000 plus match payments.

Mason's expected signing continues owner Nathan Tinkler's drive to have local players return to play for Newcastle.

Already the Knights have lured back local juniors Snowden, Timana Tahu and Danny Buderus since Tinkler took over.

Mason grew up in Toronto and played his junior career in Newcastle before joining Canterbury-Bankstown.

He is one of the most divisive characters in the game because of his strong opinions, unpredictable behaviour and run-ins with authority.

Mason controversially left the Bulldogs to join bitter rivals Sydney Roosters in 2008, before being flicked by the Bondi club at the end of 2009.

He resurfaced at North Queensland Cowboys in 2010, but decided to take up a deal at Hull last year.

Barely six games into a three-year deal, Mason walked out on Hull to join rugby club Toulon. But he hated the game and never managed a start, and has been attempting to return to league for months.

Bennett joined Newcastle to much ceremony this season but has yet to find his usual success after three wins and four losses to start his reign - including two defeats to his former club, St George Illawarra.

You've got to be worried about your forward stocks when you resort to signing Mason.

Not that I think he'll make much of a difference to their side to be honest.

Will he even get picked straight away? Congrats on him getting a start, hope he proves his critics wrong.

I predict 2-3 barnstorming performances before he gets injured and/or lazy and then does not much for the rest of the year.

40,000 plus match payments would be a good deal for the knights. If he does nothing then he's not cost them the earth but at this stage i think Mason realizes it's time to make his impact again quickly or put a hook on the wall for his boots to hang on.

The Knights have grabbed a cheap, experienced player who still may have a bit to offer a team as a squad depth player.

Listen to all you idiots talking as though the Knights are expecting him to be a starter and superstar.

He will do well with Bennett, good signing very cheap

You guys putting the boot in are idiots. Mason at least was a champion player and he now he will be playing under the best coach he has easily ever had. Bennett will get the best out of mason, you will see. As if mason would of been focused up at the cowboys with thirsty, willie tonga & co up in the tropics or at the ****ing roosters.

Good luck willie!

Source close to Mason: 'He had no meeting with Bennett or the club'. Newcastle: 'No comment, but there was no medical conducted'

if he recaptures his form of his cowboys season, he'll be a good buy for the knights

who will get the poolside rub down this time though, considering big dell don't play footy no more?

and if he hasn't learned to toe the line by now, he'll never get it through his thick head. but after the humbling experience he's endured for a little while now of so many clubs not wanting a bar of him, one can only imagine he should have his head screwed on properly now and will have learned when and how to speak and when to shut his big stupid trap

he probably won't have much impact for some time of course and especially if the knights props aren't laying down the foundation for him to work from

As if he would be on a massive contract. Simple logic will tell you he will come cheap, all things considered.

dont under estimate the value of a big experienced prop. look at ryles playing under bellamy. newcastle are light on props and would help their cause this year
