Once upon a time it was the be all and end all. First past the post takes all the chocolates. For the teams in the fight, they took it more personally than Matt Corby's neighbour. Regular rounds weren't seen as building blocks, opportunities to rest players or a good time to give a debut to your mates son.
The top teams would tenderise each other so hard trying to assert dominance and to soften them up for the return match up it would bring lower teams into contention.
In its current state there is no prestige around it. It barely rates a mention. It's a sacrificial lamb on the altar of the Grand Final.

The JJ Giltinan Shield is held with such esteem that ambitious 'single' mothers earned more winnings than the current offering during the baby bonus era.

For modern NRL I believe it would make the season and finals less predictable if we could elevate the aura of the JJ Giltinan Shield

I agree it's been shit for way to long, embarrassing for the Nrl's 100k ... but it has finally changed and minor Premiers will get 400k this year, better but still embarrassing considering what some individual players make let alone the millions the NRL rake in year after year.

Another way arousn this is to make season shorter.
Maybe extend the playoffs.
Every team play each other once (16 rounds or 17 of u include Perth)
Then have a round Robin 7 rounds in the play offs. Top 4 starts with 2 points each and bottom 4 starts with 0 points and minor premiers start with 3. Maybe punish 8th by starting -1.
Then semis as normal and then best of three grand final.
Anitehr idea is once top 8 is sorted, u only carry points from other teams you beat to get into the top 8. So someone like sharks basically get shit because they can’t beat top 8
