JAMES Roberts has become the latest NRL player to join the crazy off-season free-agent circus after rejecting a revised deal from the Gold Coast.
The Titans offered Roberts a sponsor car as a sweetener to complement his existing two-year deal which was essentially null and void due to his deal being tampered with by a staff member.
Roberts rejected the club’s offer which did not include an increase in the value of his deal.
Ultimately the club’s failure to bump up Roberts’ value has cost them one of the game’s brightest stars with the former Rabbitohs and Panthers youngster informing CEO Graham Annesley on Monday night that he would be testing the open market.
In a statement released by the Titans soon after the news broke on Monday night, Neil Henry admitted he was disappointed Roberts had chosen to walk away.
“It is obviously disappointing we are in this situation as we viewed James as part of the future of this club,” Henry said.
“I’m sure he will concede that his improved form in 2015 is a testament to his hard work and the interest several people have taken in his welfare on and off the field which has enabled him to play his best football.
“I can only wish him continued success wherever he decides to play.”
Roberts’ adviser Jeremy Donovan confirmed to foxsports.com.au late on Monday evening that while the Dally M Centre of the Year had attracted a lot of interest from rival clubs, they are yet to begin talks.
Roberts will join the likes of Peta Hiku and Tim Lafai as quality off-contract centres set to test the market.
