Pressure is my guess. Playing at the International level in Rugby Union is immense pressure. You have everyone who taught you in private school, every businessman and corporation who backed you, all telling you not to screw up.

It becomes worse when you're being outed as "the future of Rugby" by every newspaper in Australia. The ones who can't handle it either turn to drinking/drugs, turn into Russel Crowes, or just turn to crap like Quade Cooper.

I only played low level Rugby but even then I could see how crap the culture is.

My sisters ex was friends with him, party's pretty hard from what I've heard. That was a little over a year ago so not sure if he has settled down a bit since then.
