Yes he was he stated that he almost signed with panthers
We were never a chance, he was offered over a million dollars at the panthers.

And trickma is right. He was never leaving the cowboys. He is set up there with his missus. Hence why he took less cash to stay and be happier.

Thurston was never leaving the Cowboys.
He could have been lying but he admitted himself that he was really close to signing with the Panthers. Gould offered him a brilliant deal plus a life after Footy, but he said his family would have a better life in Townsville so he stayed.

We were never in it though.

ZERO TACKLE NRL CLUBS GIVE UP ON LURING FOLAU HOME #NRL

NRL looking unlikely
The NRL’s hopes of luring Israel Folau back to the game where he made his name appear over following revelations the star Wallabies recruit more than a month ago ceased negotiations with all clubs about a possible return.

It was reported at the start of the month that Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs had been negotiating with Folau but the talks had been kept secret in order not to jeopardise the NSW Waratah’s selection for the Wallabies to face the British and Irish Lions. The Sydney Roosters were also mentioned as a possible destination for Folau once his rugby commitments concluded this season.

However, The Australian was told yesterday Folau and his manager, Isaac Moses, had stopped talking to both clubs well over a month ago as speculation intensified that he would sign a new deal with rugby union in the near future.

Folau has indicated his preference is to remain in rugby and his management was clearly waiting to see how he performed against the Lions before finalising negotiations.

Don't go, Israel. You are just 24 years old and rugby league will always be there.

If you put your massive offer from Canterbury-Bankstown in mothballs don't fret. They will be calling back in a year or two, and a year or two after that.

In three whirlwind years you can gorge yourself on rugby union's finest treats - the British Lions, the Rio Olympics Sevens, the Tri-Nations and the World Cup in England - then head off in whatever direction you wish.

There are millions of sportsmen around the globe who dream of being where you are at the moment, dominating a code, blissfully playing the game with a smile on your face.

We noticed you even broke out in a smile before you crossed the line for both tries against the British Lions.

After two years of trudging through the jungle at GWS Giants you have burst on to the open plains with your mojo back and the look of a man at peace.

Surf the wave, mate. These are the glory years.

This is too precious an opportunity to waste for the sake of rushing back to Mount Rugby League, which already has your flag in the top of it.

If the money's the worry we promise you this: Keep going the way you are going in rugby and by the 2015 World Cup in England you will never have to worry about money again.

It's a fascinating story.

Rugby union may struggle to afford him, but they simply can't afford to lose him after his extraordinary Wallabies debut has him lauded throughout the rugby world as the newest sensation in an attritional game in which it can be difficult to showcase natural brilliance.

The word on the street in Sydney for the past month is that Folau is close to signing with the Bulldogs in a deal which would see him becoming the first sportsman to play three codes in three years. But the late mail says he is feeling the love of rugby around him and is having a rethink.

If he goes it would leave a cannonball-sized hole in the Wallabies set-up, for reasons beyond his great talent.
As bold as the team were against the Lions, the stark fact is they are not overloaded with recognisable stars and poster boys.

Will Genia might be the world's best player and a hero to many, but there is just something about a mesmerising, fancy-dancing outside back that adds a layer of stardust in a David Campese sort of way.

The Folau story is captivating for its extremes.

He's gone from being the most overpaid player in one code to the best buy in another in one season.

It's never happened before and surely will never happen again. How the NRL must be kicking itself over the bewildering salary cap fiasco which saw his proposed deal with Parramatta fall through.

Had that deal gone through, Folau could have been wreaking Saturday night's havoc against NSW in Wednesday's State of Origin match.

Since his youngest days when he became the first player to play for the Queensland under-19s at 16, Folau had always been an ahead-of-his-time player who had never failed, so he never had to plumb the limits of his ability.

In rugby league he was a burst player with explosive close-range power, but there was always the suggestion he could have been fitter.

When he signed with GWS, Broncos players interviewed about his departure smiled and dropped whimsical lines like "the fitness side of things will be interesting".

In AFL he had to become more of an endurance athlete, which helped him greatly.

Then there's what we might call the "had worse days" syndrome in which he became like a man who was bitten by a shark no longer complaining about bee stings.

No matter what sort of bad days he has in rugby, he can draw consolation that they are not as bad as those torturous, empty, unfulfilling times with Greater Western Sydney when his team was being thrashed and he was stranded, lost and lonely in the forward line like a man at a station waiting for a train that would never arrive.

A year ago there were no trains at all. Now, there is not one but two gravy trains rolling in on different platforms.
He deserves to enjoy the ride.

If we are serious about being a billion dollar industry we need to find ways to keep guys like Izzy, Hunt etc. in the game. This entire ban the biff crap isn't going to get the kids to want to play NRL, it's them wanting to emulate to their heroes and we don't want them playing for other codes.

I think whats stopping us getting to that point is the NRL themselves.

Couldn't agree more

I thought the nrl was poorly run while David gallop was in charge but now it's worse the independent commission has done nothing major yet

When izzy scored that second try on Saturday our chances of signing him evaporated IMO.
He will one get a substantial top up from the ARU.

If NRL want to keep players in the game they need to start doing the same. It doesn't matter who you play for to get the top up, you just have to stay in the game. Like the ARU it won't be given to everyone, maybe the top 50 players

Agreed. All they have done is implement knee jerk policies in reaction to issues like shoulder charge and fighting in a lame attempt to get more kids to play. In an attempt to make the game more appealing for overbearing mothers they have ruined the game for people and families who are smart enough to realise that a punch in origin isn't going to get Jnr injured in the U6 mods

Almost 30 pages on this, and he may never have even been in much contention of joining us to begin with.

This thread should go up there for thread of the year:grinning:
