V’landys floats return of under 20s to fix blowout scores

The National Youth Competition could make a return as part of a “future strategy” being worked on by the ARL Commission in a bid to stop blowout scores.

ARLC Chair Peter V’landys is of the belief that the lack of a stepping stone for young players to progress to the NRL could be playing a role in the lopsided scores we’ve seen in the opening four weeks, but in particular Round 4.

In 2018, Jersey Flegg and Hastings Deering Colts — NSW and Qld-based under 20s competitions — returned after 10 years of the National Youth Competition. Under the NYC, all 16 NRL clubs had a direct under 20s team which would play interstate teams just like the top grade, usually as a curtain raiser to the main game.

V’landys toldThe Sydney Morning Heraldthat the Commission is looking at the blowout results and is considering bringing back the NYC.

“There is not a stepping stone to the NRL and at some point this was going to happen, in my view, and we are rectifying that,” said.

“There’s no doubt the under 20s and participation is a massive factor and we are going to correct it.”

“We want under 20s and reserve grade coming back as a precursor in front of the game.

“The clubs that are successful are the ones that have maintained the best roster and the ones that have the best participation programs.

“It’s no coincidence that while our participation is down we are having this problem.”

The current Flegg and Colts competitions — which have raised the age to under 21s after last season was cancelled — puts the respsonsibility on clubs to devote time and resources on developing players. However, the re-introduction would see the NRL have a closer eye on the development.

However, according to the Herald, several club bosses aren’t entirely on board with the idea. It’s quite costly to fly an NRL squad interstate and source accommodation for them, let alone a 19-man under 20s squad too.

Round 4 had an average winning margin of 26.1, up from Round 4, 2020’s winning margin of 13.9.

The first four games of the round had especially large winning margins. Penrith beat Manly by 40, the Rabbitohs beat the Bulldogs by 38, the Storm beat the Broncos by 34 and the Sharks beat the Cowboys by 38.

A lot of fans, media personalities and even some players have blamed the sped up game on the back of the Commission’s rule changes as the culprit. V’landys said last week he’d “never introduce measures to hide mediocrity,” suggesting there’s bigger issues at hand for clubs who are struggling under the new rules.

He did, however, admit to the Herald that he was shocked to see just how big the divide has been in the opening rounds.

“I didn’t expect it to be this magnitude,” V’landys said.

“But you can’t just put it on one factor. The rules probably have a small part. The under 20s have got a small part. The rosters have a major part; it’s a multitude of factors.”

“It’s going to take some time but we’ve seen the ramifications of it.”

Vlandys has no fucking idea. For a start they seem to intentionally block the pathways of juniors outside of the top 30 to save money by only allowing clubs to have 6 development players in line for promotion. Secondly the salary cap is seemingly very poorly policed. Without going into a lot of detail again, if the club willing to offer the most money to marquee players is going to lose out to a club that has loads of talent and can seemingly offer hundreds of thousands of dollars less than their market value the talent will never spread out. Should be a situation where the highest bidder sets the price on a player, even their current team would have to be in the same ballpark to even make the player an offer.

The uneven spread of talent didn't start under the tenure of Vlandys, but if he thinks that getting the NYC running again will fix things he's either very stupid or taking the piss.

As Wendog points out this seems to just be a story meant to deflect from the fact that the rules he implemented are royally fucking the competitive nature of the game.

Gould said the opposite about NYC.

Gonna get interesting.

Expect the white anting to start getting ramped up soon...outlived his usefulness to them and there'll be a scratching soon.

Personally I am more than happy to have 3 games at every home game, that's a good day of football and justifies the extra travelling time to Wankfest. Make Melbourne have U20's instead of letting the SE Qld teams develop their players for them. I don't give a fark that they have no juniors in Mexico, that's their problem, if they want an NRL team there then they have to have 3 grades. About time for the Chooks, they need to get their own U20's instead of pinching them from everyone else, they shouldn't be allowed to steal anyone they like that shows talent and hook them with brown paper bags.

If you want to be an NRL Club then you have to have all 3 levels of NRL teams, if you cant then you don't deserved to be an NRL Club, is pretty farkin simple.

Anything done to help juniors is good and likely to be welcomed, however this is not the answer to the current growing problems. There is a gap in quality, and the step up between NSW/QLD cup and NRL is too big. A new NYC isn't going to address that gap.

Nothing to see here.. I'm sure the 20's comp where like 2% of players translate to regular NRL players is the answer to the problem..

Oh wait.. According to them there is no problem. Maybe if they stopped making the top 30 so restrictive and let clubs play their Reserve Graders and youngsters without exemptions, then that would help solve the problem? But that would be too logical..

Just need a proper open reserve grade where players can at least make the minimum wage. Also about 5 years for the comp to mature clubs won't like it because of the money.

The new rule changes will discourage player participation in lower grades. The players are being thrashed and injuries are at levels ive never seen in the game because of it.

Vlandys is actually shit. Hes lucky the right people love him coz of profit. But he doesnt care about the effect on players, only on the bottom line. And hes been banging on about expansion in the NRL when we already have a talent shortage. He has NFI.

1. Sack V'Landys now.

2. Is he listening to Gould again?

3. How come all the fans can see what the issues are but the ones who count can't? They are either useless, on drugs or corrupt!

Ask any fan of the game and they will tell you that the problems with proper player development started when the NRL abandoned the two curtain raisers to the first grade game which were supposed to be a showcase of up and coming junior talent.. The experience gained in those games was critical to adapting to the speed and toughness of first grade.
It is really hard to compare then until now though , as back on the day in the lower grades, to enable a player to take a reserve position on the bench they had to play at least half a game in one of the lower grade game on game day. The penchant for fresh reserves and the speeding up of the game with a multitude of rule changes is also another reason things went a bit to shit and we now get these 'blowout scores"... they don't even seem to consider that as part of the problem. The salary cap structures too play a part.

I liken it to the fact that they are now putting in new light rail tracks ( around Parramatta and probably elsewhere) when previously they had removed them to accommodate cars on the road. Changing things can sometimes be a backwards step especially when it is then decided many years later to go back to the way it was in ' the old days" That may be harder than first thought.
