Is it better to wear no watch than a watch costing <$1000?

If you had ~$5k for a mens and ~$5k for a womens watch, what would everyone suggest?

With a $5k budget, can you get a decent womens watch with some diamons on the bezel?

What do you want the watch for? Every day wear? Special occasion? Under a cuff? Sport style? Pilot style? Happy to go 2nd hand?

Lots of questions...

Good question.

Previously it would have been a Monday - Friday office mens watch under a french cuff.

Now since I'm working from home I'm not even sure of the purpose of a potential watch purpose. I guess it would become a special occassion watch.

For the womens watch with diamonds on the bezel it would definitely be something for special occassions.

Diamonds are nice but tend to eat into the cost of the actual watch. So you end up with a middling watch with diamonds. Or you can pour the money into the watch. For a women for me the Cartier Tank is the defining style and if you don't mind second hand from a watchmaker you could do worse than looking here http://clockmaker.com.au/cartier.html if she is set on diamonds the Longines might work https://www.longines.com/en-au/watch-conquest-classic-l2-386-0-87-6

For the male there are heaps of options, Omega Seamaster could do you for special occasions and everyday wear http://clockmaker.com.au/w/k7227.html

If you want new, hit someone like Shums up in Sussex St. https://www.shumswatches.com/ they have a good range and will negotiate.

Longines would be nice for his and hers, with the added Moonphase https://www.longines.com/en-au/watch-the-longines-master-collection-l2-909-4-51-6

Grand Seiko is another option https://www.grand-seiko.com/au-en/collections/heritage they are like Lexus is to Toyota. Extremely well made and finished watches for the price.

Lots of brands to check out, Oris, Tudor, Nomos, Tag, have a browse around Chrono24 to get ideas on pricing/styles etc https://www.chrono24.com.au/

I was at work this week and noticed a ladies watch with the wrong time, it was 5-6 hours off. I couldn't digest this so I told her. She says it stopped working a few days ago and needs new battery. Then she wears it for next few days still with wrong time.

I followed it up and she said she would get it fixed over weekend.

But what I can't digest is why continue to wear if not working. It's like carrying around a mobile phone with no battery. Useless

Yes but it still has to work. If it's a watch it needs to keep the time. I couldn't believe what I was seeing (or wasn't seeing)
Well when I used to wear a watch and the battery would die I'd still wear it so that if I went past a shop they could change the battery for me. Force or habit etc...
