He was lucky to get on the roster and was always going to be content making a practice squad this year and playing next. He over achieved and got a roster spot and has now been waived so he's back where he thought he'd be. This isnt a rumour (so moving the thread from "rumours"). They have cut him from the main squad. If no other team picks him up 49ers can have him in their practice squad (kinda like being in nsw cup here). With nfl you can't drop a player to the practice squad and keep them unless nobody else wants the player in their main squad, and the bottom teams get first dibs.
