In Turvey’s first 2 years with us in 76 and 77, we also had Bobby McCarthy leading the side. Turvey acknowledged in his book Top Dog, how valuable McCarthy’s experience was in those 2 years. More recently Noddy did a similar job. You can learn just as much from Senior players as you can from a coach.
Good point. The Dogs have a history of bringing in experienced players from successful clubs:
Kevin Ryan from St George played with us in 1967-69,
Bob McCarthy & Gary Stevens from Souths played with us in 1976-77, and
Ricky Stuart and Brad Clyde from Raiders played with us in 1999-2000.

Why were u so vocal on Josh Jackson departure?? Would this not be the ideal situation for him to of stayed as long as possible
Jackson is completely irrelevant to this discussion because he became a part off the rot at the club and had become stale. It isn't his fault but he really should've left years ago for himself to further his career.

The whole idea is about bringing in OUTSIDE experience. Players that have played in specialised roles for years and can help guide the next generation at the club. In particular I'm talking about props and middle forwards. A young prop needs this protection and guidance and Gus going as far as attempting to recruit a semi retired SST confirms it.

Panthers nailed this not just in the forwards but across other key positions and it played a big part in the success they have today. Panthers are now in the next phase of this and are again nailing it by bringing in youth while their senior guys are still performing so they don't have to go out and make whole bunch of risky recruitment decisions again.

Just look at Panthers recruitment for this season, they've brought in Alamoti, Riley Price, Laurie and Schneider. Last season they brought in Hosking, Peachey, Garner and Cogger. For a club like us that would be a disaster but for a club like Penrith it's perfect.

Gus for whatever reason has not really taken the same approach with our roster and has instead favoured spending big money on youth who could potentially be key players in the future. We've splashed out for a winger, a centre to play 5/8, another centre to potentially play fullback, a strike backrower, etc. The one recruit we nailed was Mahoney, he is the perfect blend of experience and youth however we fucked that all up with our inability to recruit a frontrow to protect him and instead exposed the biggest weakness in his game.

If you still want to think the likes of Tamou, Kite, Merrin, Soward, Maloney, etc played no part in Penrith success then go for it.

One of the only times i agree with you and on all points raised. The player market now is to competitive it seems to follow the same path or we are that bad no one wants to be part of the rebuild.

You want to pretend those players were available. If they were Gus would have got them. But the increase in the Salary Cap just allowed clubs to keep those vital players. Now teams are maximising the higher salary cap and no big leaps are coming, other than the cashed up Dolphins all the bottom feeding clubs will be able to compete for those guys nearing the end of their careers and want one more decent payday that a successful clubs cannot offer. It's now about finding the right players to do that. Sometimes you have to recruit whats available and see what Gus can do to wrangle someone out of another club. We have the right squad to negotiate to assist that now.

RCG credited them, JFH credited RCG. Checkmate.
@Bazildog RCG on Kite

"There's no doubt I wouldn't be here without 'Kitey'. Day in, day out, he pushed me like no one else. From those brutal early mornings in the gym to picking apart every missed tackle in video review, he wouldn't let me settle. He saw something in me before I did, a spark he fanned into a flame. He's a freak on the field, but off it, he's a mentor, a brother. So cheers, thanks for being the thorn in my side that made me bloom."

RCG is a poof from Parra who was flicked from Penif before they won anything. You and ya mate are double check mate. Maloney easily was the biggest influence on Penrith and their play and winning attitude.

JFH is a fucking beast that was always going to be an Alpha.

Please leave me alone I am putting on my spray tan.

Oh I’m sorry Marty.. I didn’t mean to make you cry by half agreeing with your original post. If you like I can dig up the many people that credited Maloney with having a massive influence.

But apart from that poof RCG and Goflya that you and @Rodzilla want to circle jerk over I kind of agreed with your post.

Do you need a wambulance..?
