We recently lost our 1 year old chihuahua, she was killed and eaten by our 7 year old staffy which we had to put down as we couldn't trust her around our daughter. We are looking at getting a pug, was just wondering if anyone knew if they were good with kids and other animals(we have a cat and a couple of rabbits)?? any info would be much appreciated...Ps unfortunately my wife doesn't want a bulldog.

Get a rottweiler as a pup. My sister has 2 and have always been protective over the kids from when they were babies. Very family friendly in the right hands.

i think we will go for a smaller dog, we live on half an acre at the moment but will be moving coastal in a few years and most likely a smaller yard

Yeah rottweilers are very good around the children and they are very easy to look after. Likewise with German Shepards.

If you want something small and good around the kids, Maltese Terriers are very good as well

Bulldogs are quite high maintenence, you gotta pay overs to keep them healthy in their first 2 years and keeping them fit and controlling their diet aren't very easy.

Haha, well my ex gf had both, the Bulldog she had lasted her just under 5 years with too many health complications, while the Maltese terrier, she had it for over 12 years and she only had the maltese terrier since the dog was aged 2.

Australian Bulldog?

Apparently, they don't suffer the same health issues that English Bulldogs do. Or a French Bulldog?

Or, depends where you are, go and adopt a mutt from a pound.

I've got a border collie and absolutely love him to death! He's such a gentleness friendly dog. He's really protective of my wife which is good. Apparently there excellent with kids and also the smartest dogs in the world. They are very energetic but so they require a lot of walking

I gotta ask - why did you introduce a 1yr old pup to a staffy? What were the sexes of each?
they lived together for a year, never any issues between them, the chihuahua had brain damage, so they never played together or picked fights so we never thought it would be an issue, the closest she got to being hurt was when an owl tried to grab her...if we could change it of course we would never have had them together, its cost us 2 dogs

If you are specifically after a small dog - a Shetland Sheepdog. Very affectionate.

Will need as much exercise and brushing as a border collie, but absolutely adorable.

pugs have loads of problems with breathing and bones etc

honestly get a cross breed they are more healthy

A Maltese (very friendly and sweet good with kids) crossed with almost any other small dog will give you a great family pet.

source: my cousin is a vet and this was her genuine recommendation + my own experience with this type of dog

Johnson American bulldog- staunch as **** and great with the kids. They can't leave the house without her trotting after them to keep an eye out.
