Greg Brentnall was my favourite
Say Brentnall overall may have been the best. Great attacking, superb in defence, unbeatable at the high ball & a huge kick that he could land on a 50 cent coin. Who can forget his amazing kick for the Steve Gearin grand final try.

Phil Sigsworth?
Though I never forgave him for getting sent off in the 86 GF

Didn’t he get his kick and catch skills from junior VFL?

The beauty of that kick for Gearin, was the type of kick he put up at speed. You would not see anyone attempt a bomb on the run and nail it. I'm sure they would of rehearsed that play at training but it was magical to pull it off on a grand final.

I just hope Crichton is better than them all.

Greg Brentnall
Rod Silva
Luke Patten
Mick Potter.
I chose these guys as they performed consistently for us over a few seasons. Sure we had more flamboyancy from Barba and Mcgrady, but after collecting a Daly m and rothmans respectively, never replicated those feats much further.

People give Barba way too much credit for his one good season with us. The style of football we played that year contributed hugely to him going that well. We generally had three forwards running in formation and popping passes like crazy. If they didn't receive the pass they forced defenders to commit in defense. Any player with a bit of acceleration had a field day as this style of lay created gaps to exploit on at least three of every six tackles we had with the ball. Reynolds and Keating also had a great year on the basis of them being ready to support on those offloads.

Barba never came close to replication of that season elsewhere because the NRL outlawed the decoy runner after that season.

Seeing that Gearin try live, as a 13 year old, and the ecstasy that poured out from Doggies supporters starved of success after a 38 year premiership drought, was as much of a defining moment on my journey to manhood as seeing my first Penthouse centrefold.

(Which occurred at roughly the same time if I recall. For the youth amongst us, this was a time when porn could only be found in the dark corners of your local newsagent, in a glossy mag, wrapped in plastic).

Oh the memories, you’re same vintage as me. I remember watching that game on Channel 7 with Rex Mossop and that try sealed the game and broke that very long drought. Up until that point I’d never been happier in my short life. Funny thing when I went outside there was a moth plague, must’ve been all those happy bulldog moths cheering after such a long drought.

Best of all we beat the Rorters!

As for that other new found passion I’m not sure what was more exciting seeing Gearin score that try or my first glimpse of Candy Loving in the centrefold. Wow!

The first and only time I saw my father cry was when Gearin scored that try.

Ben Barba does not get close to Daly M without Sam Kasiano.

Spot on Rod.

Neither rugby league, nor adult entertainment, will ever be the same again! (sigh)

Gary Dowling was best I've seen at joining the backline at full pace, his timing & strength was amazing. However he was a bit wobbly with the bombs & suspects in defence.
A game at Brookvale when just on the half time siren Dowling had the ball close to his own tryline and put up a bomb - Sloane 's effort on weeken reminded me of it

We also used to be famous for our stellar forward packs as well. It's really highlights how far we've fallen since the old days

All mentioned were great fullbacks. Ben Barba in 2012. 22 tries. 24 line breaks. 159 tackle breaks. 31 offloads. 22 try assist.
