I don't rate Meaney that highly as of right now. I think it's a good thing that he got a taste of first grade this year, but he has A LOT of work to do before he can be a good player in the NRL. He needs to put on some size, improve his positional play defensively, and develop a passing game. I think Hopoate is a good fullback, not great, but good. Where he lacks speed, footwork and "game-breaking" ability, he makes up for it with his passing game, his strength as a ball-runner, and his ability to support our forwards in attack which Mbye struggled with. When we run block plays, I'm very comfortable with Hoppa swinging around the back, either throwing a cut-out ball, running it himself, or putting a kick through. He played a hand in a couple of tries last night.
Meaney just doesn't offer that much at the moment, and that's not a bad thing he just has to grow and improve as every young player does. My priority is ensuring that Lachie Lewis develops quickly to be our #7, and I think he will reach his potential with the best supporting spine.
That would be 1.Hopoate 6.Foran 7. Lewis 9.Segeyaro.
Don't get me wrong, I like Meaney and think he's a talented player with upside, but from what I've seen from him this year in both first-grade and reggies, I think he'd be better suited developing for one more season.
Thoughts?
