i dont rate any of our players/coaches (strategy) in defence,we are one of the only teams that refuses to gang tackle and it costs us,its no secret our pack is the least mobile in the comp.the Storm and Cronulla have the most athletic packs in the comp yet they dont see any advantage in making one on one tackles, why do we persist.compounding the fact that we are missing one on one tackles our players are lacking the confidence to execute our much practiced up and in style of defence.the inside players dont push across hard enough when we get beaten on the outside.
if u practice an up and in style of defence then your wingers are going to get beaten on the outside, and because the winger has just pushed up into the face of the defence he will not be able to turn and catch the opposition,be it Hazem El Masri, be it Brett Dallas.thus the centre, 5/8 and/or halfback must push across to cover, which our players are failing to do alot lately.also, when you beat and up and in style of defence on the outside if the cover defense makes the tackle, most teams know to throw it back towards the posts and a gap will open up. there is more merit in a sliding gang tackling defence then an up and in one on one style of defence
i think that we have to move away from one on one tackles and the up and in defence. there is no advantage in it these days.we have alot of guys struggling to make/complete tackles, and it seems like most of them are one on one.even 2 one 1.the storm have 3-4 ppl in each tackle if they can just for the simple fact that it takes them longer to get out of the ruck.
when we try to work players over on the ground it looks like exactly that,we are working them over.when the better teams do it they are slowly peeling off players pulling their arms out of chicken wing holds/grabs etc.
we need to work on a sliding defence!
not having this style of defence is making players like barba sully hickey and hazem a liabilty in defence.anybody who lacks in size or lacks in mobility (which is half our team incase you havent been watching) gets targeted week in week out.and it makes it hard to gauge what these players true prospects are.
