Parramatta have announced 11 players will be leaving the club as the Eels look to freshen up their roster after coming up short in another finals series.

David Gower is retiring to take up a role in the club's education and wellbeing team while fellow forward Peni Terepo has decided to take a break from the game and "will look to re-evaluate his footballing future in the coming months", according to the Eels statement.

Kane Evans is joining the Warriors and Stefano Utoikamanu is off to the Wests Tigers while Jai Field, Andrew Davey, Rhys Davies, Jaeman Salmon and Brad Takairangi will not have their contracts renewed.

Development squad members Watson Heleta and Kyle Schneider have also been released.

Mature-age rookie Davey has already found a new home, signing a two-year deal with Manly.

The hard working back-rower has played 10 first grade matches after making his NRL debut for the Eels against the Sea Eagles at Lottoland in July this year. He played in both of Parramatta's finals matches.

Meanwhile, the Titans have confirmed centre Patrick Herbert will join their ranks in 2021, bolstering their back line after the loss of Young Tonumaipea to Super Rugby.

Herbert debuted for the Warriors in 2019 and played 13 games for the club this season, scoring seven tries.

"The [Titans] finished the season really strongly and I'm excited by what we can do next year," Herbert said.

Melbourne have re-signed prop Christian Welch until the end of 2022 and also secured the future of fellow forward Max King on a one-year extension.

Welch, who debuted for the Maroons in last year's State of Origin series, made his NRL debut for the club in 2015.

"Christian is having an outstanding 2020 to back up earning his first jersey for the Maroons last year," Storm general manager of football Frank Ponissi said.

"What we like a lot about Christian is the leadership skills that he possesses on and off the field and the dedication he puts into improving his game."

With an eye to the future, the club has also announced that Jack Howarth will join Storm’s full-time squad for the first time at the start of pre-season.

The Panthers have fended off rivals who were eager to pounce on their rising star by re-signing Charlie Staines until the end of 2023.

The 20-year-old outside back, who scored four tries in his NRL debut against Cronulla this season, has agreed to a contract extension, the club announced on Wednesday.

Jaeman Salmon really fell off a cliff after his car crash.

I reckon there is still a footballer in there. Just needs a good club.

Contracts mean nothing. It would be worth paying out the shit spine the dogs have to get someone else.

It doesn't really work like that.
Well it can, but you'd have to wear it on the cap, so what's the point.
The trick is to Move them on and get them to agree. That's the art of the deal.
When players are shopped to England successfully it's because somehow you've sold that to the player. Maybe paid a little freight, but basically convinced them to leave on their own accord.

This is why I am looking with absolute amazement at Jason Holbrook at the Titans this year. Somehow he managed to get Latu to go to Widnes. He was on 600 large. Ryan James, Bryce Cartwright to suit and most incredibly, he got Shannon Boyd to walk away from 2 more years of his deal at 600k and retire.
I reallllllly am aching to know how he pulled that last one off, when only weeks before Boyd said he would only retire if he gets his money.
Unless he did and they are cap hampered the next few years, but their aggressive recruiting doesn't mesh with the idea they are 600 behind. They probably paid some freight to Latu too

Typical.

We shed players and get accused of not showing loyalty.

Parra dumps more players and it's a "freshen up".

No wonder I don't go to news sites.
It is our own "Family Club" mantra that works against us and gives journalists the ammunition they need to write crap against us!!! What worked in the 80's doesn't hold water today. Even players were different then, most played for the love of the game getting payed peanuts while holding down jobs to support their families....now it is all about the money and loyalty to your club and jersey is fickle at best.

Be a perfect 14 actually. Not convinced he's a starter but the bench utility he suits
I think he has a few attributes that make him at least an interesting prospect. Wouldn't be a bad signing for a year just to see if he can be something

Not against it actually. Don't see him starting but all good sides have a great 14. It's actually a very important position.

Ho hum..........a bunch of nuffies who would not have been on big coin.....they need to replace them and they still have players off contract... Haze Dunster, George Jennings, Will Smith, Ray Stone. May also have to replace Jennings senior after his little indiscretion....

They got their reality check after believing they were in with a chance in the finals.......their half back could not take the game by the scruff of the neck and two errors by him cost his side dearly ...he is not as good as many believe he is and as for "King" Gutho..........no celebration dance for him...

With the average player contract at ~3 years and having 30 contracted players, moving on ~10 players every year is about right. Get the contract timing right so as not to have 20 players of contract one year and then none the next year or vice versa.
