Brisbane halfback Ben Hunt accepts St George Illawarra’s lengthy multi-million dollar deal offer

BEN Hunt has accepted the biggest deal of his career.

The Brisbane playmaker has agreed to a six-year, multi-million dollar deal to join St George Illawarra from next season.

Earlier this week, the Dragons upped the ante in their pursuit to make Brisbane’s halfback their marquee man and it’s paid off.

On Friday afternoon, Foxsports.com.au revealed the Red V tabled the halfback a massive six-year deal with the final season an option in his favour.

Hunt has since accepted the offer which will make him one of the game’s richest players.

The deal is understood to be worth almost $1 million a season.

Hunt will play out this year with the Broncos before leaving Red Hill for the first time in his career.

The Dragons have plenty of cash to splash with half their squad unsigned beyond this year, including five-eighth Gareth Widdop and fullback Josh Dugan.

They were also in desperate need of signing a quality playmaker after missing out on both Luke Keary and Corey Norman last year.

Ultimately, the Dragons’ offer was a mammoth deal Brisbane couldn’t get anywhere near.

In fact, the Broncos could only afford to offer him a fraction of the price the Dragons were willing to pay thanks to having 11 of their starting 17 off-contract, including Darius Boyd, Anthony Milford and Andrew McCullough.

Not wanting to lose Hunt, the Broncos made him a three-year offer in a bid to keep his partnership with Milford together.

But it was in vain.

Milford is the Broncos’ preferred half, with the club in talks to extend the five-eighth’s deal for another three seasons.

Rather than take less and stay with the only club he’s ever known, Hunt will now uproot his young family and become the Dragons’ leader.

The 26-year-old made his NRL debut for the Broncos in 2009 and is approaching 200 games for the club.

Wow! Dragons paid massive overs for Hunt. He is overrated and often goes missing.

Widdop and Hunt .... interesting combination because it's much like the Mbye and Reynolds show ... 2 ball runners, and 0 organisers.

Not the answer for scoring points though.

Maybe we should chase Dugan as he's off contract this year...

Tbh I don't rate Dugan and haven't for the past 2 or so years, I don't see the X-Factor from him that he used to show in the past, his still a good player though and better then what we have.

Lol what a shit decision from dragqueens. I'd be filthy if we paid this nuftie massive overs. Overrated. Had 1 solid year and is 26? Not to mention end of his deal he will be 33

Probably not worth that type of coin but i think him and widdop could potentially make things happen in the halves.

This is one of the worst recruitment decisions I have seen in the NRL for years.

Ben Hunt isn't a bad player but he's far from a good one either, certainly not worth $6mill over 5 years.

It will only end in tears for the Dragons, Hunt will be under pressure form his first day there and he will crack under it.

Signing anyone up in NRL beyond a 3yr contract is ludicrous. Especially for that kind of coin.

In fact, I'm betting the only way this lasts beyond 3yrs is if he delivers a premiership by the 3rd year

Dragons were desperate to sign someone, sad to say but we're becoming like them, linked to many players but hardly ever sign anyone.

I'd say the long term combo would probably be Hutchinson and Hunt as halves, Widdop will probably be moved on.

Well if mbye is worth 700k , Ben hunt is worth close to what he's signed for. Let's not forget he was top 3 halves in 2014/2015

He's a good player, but not that great imo. I can only remember him being good in ONE season, the rest he's pretty meh.

Most likely, but neither can organise a root in a brothel.

Heck .. the only thing Ben Hunts good for is a finals dropped ball. But since the Dragons never make the finals they won't ever have to worry about that.

This is why the Dragons will NEVER win a Premiership. It took the Cowboys 10 years to win a Premiership when they threw money at Thurston. It wasn't until 2015 when they actually gave Thurston a quality team to work with that they actually achieved something, which, ironically, is thanks to Ben Hunt knocking-on from the golden-point restart.

Now watch, the rest of the Dragons team for the next 5 years will be packed with mediocre players, and they'll be lucky to make the top 8.

Good luck Ben Hunt, you just signed away your best chance at winning a Premiership!

IMG_3127.JPG 1M for Ben hunt. That's ludicrous. That's like us paying 800k for mybe and he hasn't even proved if he can lead a team. All I can say is that dragons are desperate and mcgreagor is on anti depressants.
