NRL 2024: Transfer Whispers, Leo Thompson, Bulldogs, Knights, Ben Hunt, Clint Gutherson, St George Illawarra Dragons, Parramatta Eels, contracts (foxsports.com.au)
The Bulldogs are reportedly the favourites to sign arguably the most sought after forward in the NRL in Knights enforcer Leo Thompson.
WWOS’ The Mole reported the Bulldogs are in the box seat to land Thompson, who is set to test his value on the open market from November 1.
Thompson still has a year to run on his Knights’ deal worth a reported $350,000, but come November 1 he is set to field offers from a variety of clubs hunting quality front-rowers, including the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs are desperate to add reinforcements to their middle, which was an area they struggled in despite making the finals in 2024.
The 24-year-old is currently with the New Zealand Test team and can drive his asking price up even further with a big performance in the Pacific Championships.
Thompson could command at least double his current salary on the open market and the Bulldogs have money to spend as they prepare to let Josh Addo-Carr go, who has been linked with the Dragons.
However, new Knights recruitment boss Peter O’Sullivan knows the club needs to keep Thompson and will cdo everything in his power to keep Thompson, given the club let Daniel Saifiti leave to join the Dolphins.
The Knights have already had talks with Thompson and his manager but the talented front-rower is in no hurry to put pen to paper, until he tests his value on the open market.
Thompson has scored two tries in 64 NRL games for the Knights since his debut in 2022 and has played three Tests for the Kiwis to date.
Would be a massive signing if it comes to fruition.
