Melbourne lock Dale Finucane becomes NRL’s most wanted man

THE battle for Dale Finucane’s signature is heating up with six NRL clubs chasing the Melbourne lock for next season.

Foxsports.com.au can reveal the Wests Tigers are the latest club to join the race after it was reported last week that five clubs were bidding for the 25-year-old.

With his most impactful seasons in front of him and with a market value of around $650,000-a-season, we can also reveal Finucane is attracting offers between three and five seasons in length.

It should come as little surprise so many clubs are keen to sign the forward long-term with the Bega product taking his game to another level since leaving Canterbury for the Storm in 2015.

The Tigers should also have cash to play with for 2018 with several forwards off-contract, including the likes of Tim Grant, Joel Edwards and Ava Seumanufagai.

Foxsports.com.au reported on Wednesday that they’ve identified Roosters prop Kane Evans as a player of interest and they’re also attempting to re-sign their captain Aaron Woods, while former Kiwi international Elijah Taylor has an option in his favour for next season.

The Tigers join Newcastle in the queue after the Knights reached out to the Country Origin representative a fortnight ago in hopes of adding some grunt and experience to their young pack.

The Knights have made no bones about their plans to bring in some marquee men to complement their exciting rookies, with Matt Scott and Jack Bird also high on their wishlist.

Finucane has already met with Knights coach Nathan Brown and head of football Darren Mooney for a face-to-face chat and tour of their facilities.

While it’ll take a lot of work, the Storm are hopeful they keep all of their off-contract stars.

With a focus on retention, Finucane is one of a long list of off-contract players, which includes the likes of Jesse Bromwich, Nelson Asofa-Solomona, Will Chambers, Felise Kaufusi, Jordan McLean, Billy Slater and Christian Welch.

On Wednesday, Market Watch revealed the Storm are deep in negotiations to extend the contract of exciting backrower Joe Stimson.

Having lost Kevin Proctor to the Gold Coast and with Tohu Harris leaving at the end of the year for the Warriors, Stimson is a player the Storm hope can help fill that void.

The Storm are edging towards a new two-year-deal, while talks with McLean, Bromwich and Asofa-Solomona are continuing.

An Emerging NSW Blues member, Finucane has been increasing his playing time and pushing for 80 minutes this season.

Foxsports.com.au attempted to contact Finucane’s manager Andrew Purcell but he did not return calls in time for publication.

Amazing, he couldn't get a decent run with us and he goes to the storm and turns into a machine.

Initially thought the article was referring to fantasy teams or super coach....so, does Dale's price in such games reflect his off-field contract figures?

Trust Hasler and the current administration to get rid of this type of player.

Hopefully he goes to Newcastle who are in need of experienced players to rebuild.

Do these "League Reporters", not bother to read each others articles.

Yes.. lets link the Tigers to everyone... despite reporting weeks ago that the Tigers need to shed players to get under the cap.

I want to get a job as a report, so I can just make up any bullshit dribble and have it posted, whilst having absolute protection against prosecution because I'll use "insiders", "allegedly", "sources inside the club", as proof.

Poor management by our club, should never have signed up Eastwood and Tolman again... Should have held the cash and welcomed Dale back with a nice little bonus as a sorry for being such stupid c**** for allowing him to leave.

Dale has a mistake in him ,no doubt, a dropped ball, a poor pass out the back, but gee he does a hell of a lot of the ball, he runs great lines when he is the decoy, and runs them properly not a half paced im tired ill go through the motions decoy, he has a role and he does it, he's a competitor, and a genuine guy of the park, if he doesn't play well, he will tell you that himself. He has got better with the storm, but i do agree he has more to offer than elliott, tolman, fualoalo, and eastwood, even at $650,000 if that's correct.

Better admin recognised his worth. Better coach made him a real contributor in a top 4 side.
Big shout out to recruitment and retention crew [emoji6]

Go back three years ago when his contract was coming up for renewal and he wanted a big lift - and rightly so. We had T-Rex already on big $, Graham, Tolman, Eastwood going strong, Klemmer coming through and a decision to make between Finucane and Jackson. Fair dinkum who would you pick? We picked the right one. Now 2 years after being in Melbourne Finucane has improved as we would have expected him to but so has Jackson and by a far larger amount. The simple answer is we had limited capacity at the time and could only offer so much. He got more to go south. Hardly a tough decision, but also not a sign of poor recruitment on our part (at least in this instance). I don't agree that Finucane is better than Eastwood. The Beast has offloading skills way beyond Finucane. It's more a matter of where we play him on the field as to his defensive reads. He should be in the middle.

Actually some good points oatley dog, but will disagree on eastwood, he has a hell of a lot of lazy efforts in his game and in my opinion has had them for a while but when your winning they are glossed over.

What a load of baloney.

Finucane asked for a release as Bellamy guaranteed him a starting spot. Finucane signed on less dollars at the Storm than what he was getting at the Dogs.

On another note it was either "Jackson or Finucane" is another porky tale. Jackson is a backrower and Finucane is your traditional lock forward

You cannot compare Eastwood and Finucane as Eastwood is a bench player who can play 40min a game while Finucane is a player who can easily play 60+ minutes week in week out.

Finucane, Jackson & Klemmer were our future and we did not need to fool around signing players like Tony Williams, Lloyd Perrett, Antonio Kaufusi and the likes.

We were short a Halfback and than a Fullback when Barba got homesick.

Des inherited a terrific front/backrow and now he has made a brothel out of the entire squad.

In all honesty, Hasler is pathetic.

Signing a ageing winger to play fullback and a mormon who doesnt play Sundays has achieved what??

Des made 2 GF's with a team he inherited (barring Williams). He brought in Brett Morris, Hopoate, Lichaa and has achieved what?

Des should take a page out of Robinsons, Maguire, Green & Flanangan's book on how to recruit players to strengthen your squad to have the best shot at the title

You're kidding right?? TRex was an international at the time Moore signed him. Perrett was part of a package deal with his brother after we lost a number of outside backs and Lloyd was touted as the next big thing and ended up doing not much. Kaufusi was almost a freebie. Finucane was a benchie with us due to the strength of our forwards at the time. Its all good and well to say today oh how terrible it was to let him go but you can't pay for everyone, we learnt that in 2002. Brett Morris did his knee after he came to us, blame the ground staff not Des for the fact he can't stand up to FB. Finucane wasn't playing lock when he played for us and we already had a lock. It's like Taupau. He didn't do much with us because he hadn't matured and we had a full book of props. What are we supposed to do? Waste our money keeping these blokes because in a couple of years they might be OK? It's time to get a grip. We are going to buy players that might turn out to be duds and we will lose players that might go pretty well down the track. It's all a gamble and there are no certainties in life. The salary cap makes it this way. Sure we can lament the one/s that get away but to tear the coach whoever he is a new one because of it isn't doing anyone any good. All the big deal about Hoppa - he still played 21 games last year more than nearly every one else in the team and in the first half he was close to our best player. Under the circumstance of Ennis wanting 3 yrs and being offered 2 and deciding to go to the Sharks and retiring after 2 years (who had that right then) picking up Lichaa was a good play. I agree he hasn't been allowed to play his natural game and that is on Des but I also think he is trying to get some maturity into him for the next 5 years not the last one. To say he's made a brothel out of the squad is just rubbish. We still have an outstanding pack and a good bench. We also have a pretty good backline - certainly good enough for me to put my hard earned on them.

These sound like excuses. Peter Moore would make it happen. Our retention team makes other recruitment teams look good. You think Finucane is a problem? How's: Price, JT, Myles, Hannant, Tonga(all members of the last 10yr Qld squad), Pritchard, SBW, Barba, Ennis, Mason, Asotasi, Vagana, Anasta, Tapau - I'm sure there was an excuse, sorry situation surrounding each one.
Bulldogs retention alone makes me sick.
Recruitment. I don't want to think about it. Who on earth can justify signing part time players?
