They've had a Net-Gain .... 3 births during the cyclone.

This brings the death-toll to Negative-THREE !

Storm may cut power

Ms Bligh said Ergon Energy was planning for an event that could see anywhere between 150,000 and 200,000 people lose power, even in areas not impacted by the cyclone.

"They expect that we could see the impact come as far south as Mackay in relation to electricity supply," she said.

"Because this event has now escalated to a category five event, we also need to understand that it will have the capacity to bring down transmission towers.

"This means that electricity supply could be seriously disrupted even in parts of regional Queensland that do not have the effects of the cyclone and people need to be ready for that possibility."

She said 800 electrical workers would be on the ground from Saturday to ensure power was being reconnected as soon as possible.

Ms Bligh also warned there could also be a breakdown in telecommunications.

Optus and Telstra were working to put extra experts on the ground as soon as possible to restore phone networks.

"They have located additional technicians, generators and a satellite system in Mackay to transport quickly," she said.
well really if transmission towers went down, everything would get cut off within .3 of a second with all the protection relays and pilots, however in that .3 seconds, enough energy is produced that will be catastrophic...

I'll try and dig up a photo of what a 330,000kV underground transmission feeder managed to do in .3 of a second, buried 2m underground with a concrete enclosure.

bananas - wiped out
sugar cane - over $500 million worth gone, if this doesn't kill the sugar industry once and for all i don't know what will. poor bastards, everyone will go bankrupt after all the rain meant they couldn't harvest, and now everything's gone. with prices back to what they were in the 80's, this is just too cruel to even think about.

the people of north qld have done very well out of this, fear meant everybody prepared and did as they were told. to see the destruction of my home town, seeing the storm surges in the places my family lives, and all the places we holidayed as kids now all twisted, i can't help but feel pretty upset about it. reports of looting are already coming through from townsville...****ing arseholes

At least the buildings are still standing and there are no casualties so far.

Could have been much, much worse.

Poor buggers.
