Culina to take control sooner rather than later
FORMER Sydney Olympic and Sydney United coach Branko Culina is the frontrunner to take over Terry Butcher's job at Sydney FC and could be appointed as early as today.

Sydney FC formally announced its parting of ways with Butcher late on Friday. Only one of the club's five directors, Peter Turnbull, is believed to have wanted Butcher to remain coach.

The club was giving nothing away yesterday about its plans for a replacement and Culina said publicly he had heard nothing. But The Sun-Herald understands that Culina has been interviewed and is the leading contender.

As it became clear last week the head coaching role was about to become vacant, speculation centred around local coaches, and Culina, father of Socceroos midfielder Jason Culina, emerged at the top of the pile.

The Soccer NSW technical director has a number of factors working in his favour.

He has worked with three senior Sydney players, goalkeeper Clint Bolton, captain Mark Rudan and forward David Zdrilic. He is Sydney-based and has kept up his profile through his work as an analyst for television station SBS's football coverage. His former clubs, Sydney Olympic and Sydney United, were renowned for playing attractive, attacking football.

Would be a great coach!
