Yes Naden was terrible, said it when we signed him that he was hardly a sure thing at centre and much more of a winger. My point still stands though, we weren't that bad to start the season and showed some promising signs but pretty much pissed them all away with the halves musical chairs bs.
By round five Barrett was giving his third half a run. People were joking (I think it was a joke) that Flange would get the gig for round 6, then BBO for seven and eight, then back to Jake. In the event, Flange (IMO the worst performer of the three) kept the job until Barrett was gone and even during the Potter reign.

I'm still gobsmacked that someone like Barrett could luck into a well paid job that he clearly could not do, and then hang on to it for a year and a half.

I’ll probably get crapped on for this, but I often wonder with his huge boot, his vision and footy IQ whether with some specialist training Burton would be an awesome 7 and Averillo be a very good running 6 …

There’s much better footy brains on here that will probably tear me a knew one for it and I’m happy to hear their thoughts because I’m interested in peoples opinions …

I'm assuming something big is on the horizon for 2023.
I think we're already doing okay.
Big announcement (hopefully) should be Burton. Probably $250k-ish upgrade onto the 2023 cap to bring his deal forward and spread across 4(?) years.
We'd be still carrying freight for Cotric ($300k?), Seumanugagai ($150k?), and Allan ($300k?) for '23. I doubt Schoupp would have cost us any cap money.
So, that's $1mil sitting on '23 (total guesses). Maybe $100k left to spend based on the $10.4Mil figure, plus whatever the actual 2023 cap becomes once announced.

That might allow for some upgrades of the current roster, or an upgrade from outside (eg Williams for Flanagan) but it still depends on finding a home for anyone not wanted - I don't think we have much more capacity to keep carrying freight for players to play at other clubs.

Yes Mahoney is key, his service is arguably the best in the game and his control around the middle of the park is something that has been missing for ages. His service should cut down a lot of the inside pressure our playmakers have had to deal with in the past that made them look so ordinary.
Are you saying you believe Flanagan isn’t this bad on a good day?

Not sure what freight we are paying. I doubt we would release 3 players just for the sake of contract upgrades. We must have a target in mind for next year.

That's the face of a man who has just learned Looney-Looney has moved on, and he is back to being the worst player in the reggies team. The burst of stellar form (No! Let's not get carried away - slightly less awful form) that took him past Looney in the rankings has all been for nothing.

He's not the worst player in the world, but he's not even close to worth what we were paying.

So slow to be a modern Fullback.

Burton needs to be thinking run first ... not sure if his footy IQ and vision are anything to rave about at present.

Not close to being a number 7 in my view.

No chance we are paying seumanugagai anything. I think we copped 1 year of cotric pay but maybe? Dunno.

You also forgot the 600k+ freed up by Jacko retiring and while some is long player payment rfm is eligible for that during the season next year.

No chance we paid a cent for schoup. Would of been told xerri is coming alomiti and Skelton coming through. Kiraz there. If you can secure safe contract for next season we will release you. Off he went. He wouldn’t be on big $ but by time replacement comes in I’d say gives us another 100k or there abouts to cap.

alamoti skelton are unproven though in first grade and Casey isn't any better than Allan
I disagree re: Casey. For one he’s actually fast, unlike tortoise Allan. He has better upside too. Allan is solid and probably will be nothing more. Casey potentially can be a very good back.

You’re right about Alamoti and Skelton, but I’ve seen enough from both to suggest they will be first graders at some stage next season.
