Trent Barrett is set to be axed within the next 48 hours as the Bulldogs prepare to hold emergency talks on Monday following the club’s disastrous start to the season.

Canterbury officials are reportedly frustrated and spent the weekend speculating whether Barrett was still the club’s long-term boss.

It is understood the breaking point was the Magic Round loss to a struggling Knights side

Nine’s Danny Weidler then revealed the Bulldogs had cancelled media opportunities scheduled for Monday.

The developments come just weeks after Gould backed Barrett as the club’s long-term coach.

Speaking on Big Sports Breakfast Radio, the Daily Telegraph’s Phil Rothfield said Barrett would not survive.

“No he doesn’t (survive). He is gone,” Rothfield said.

“I think there’s internal issues emerging with an unhappy roster and I think the axe will fall in the next 48 hours.”

Rothfield said the club was handling the situation “very delicately” to make it appear that Phil Gould was not behind Barrett’s axing, with both men managed by Wayne Beavis.

“Phil Gould can’t be seen as the person who sacks him. But he’s got a history of getting rid of coaches. You go back to Penrith with Ivan cleary and Anthony Griffin,” Rothfield said.

“The way it will be orchestrated is, it will be a board decision. People with any real knowledge of the situation know Gus has more power than the chairman, CEO or anybody within the club and it’s his decision.

“What will happen is Trent Barrett, it will be orchestrated that (Barrett) resigns and stands down and says publicly he’s not in position to take the team forward.”

Fox League’s panel of experts spoke on the meeting on Sunday and suggested the “writing is on the wall”.

“It has been an extremely tough time for Trent Barrett and the Bulldogs but the fact that there is an emergency meeting probably suggests that the writing is on the wall,” Corey Parker said.

“Otherwise then why is there an emergency meeting, what are they going to meet about, if it is not going to be about the future of Trent Barrett.

“It has been a difficult season for them but I don’t know that another coach gets more out of what they have got, I am not sure about that, they have turned up the Bulldogs for most games but they have just really struggled to score points.
“They compete and they turn up but, there is a lot of frustration that is going on there, the performance that they put in the other night against the Knights was totally unacceptable in a lot of areas, and a lot of areas that were just effort based not talent.”

The former Panthers assistant had no answers in Friday night’s post-match press conference, having slumped to the dismal record of only five wins from 34 games.

Many fans had a positive outlook coming into this season, with a number of high-profile recruits including Matt Burton and Josh Addo-Carr ready to revive the cellar dwellers.

But now any optimism has faded and the Bulldogs will not be short of options should they be needing a new coach.

Paul Green, Shane Flanagan and Cameron Ciraldo are the experienced options to take over, while Steve Price has had a successful stint in Cronulla and Kristian Woolf has been solid at St Helens.

Canterbury players have been dramatically hidden from the media as speculation increases that Trent Barrett will be sacked imminently.
A planned Bulldogs media session for Monday morning was cancelled at the last second to shield players from being grilled over the unfolding Barrett drama.

Among the players due to be interviewed were skipper Josh Jackson and English international Luke Thompson.
But it’s believed Jackson will also be at the emergency board meeting, that is likely to determine Barrett’s fate, taking place on Monday morning.

Canterbury’s media department issued an email at 8.10am calling off the session set for 11.15am, revealing that all players were now off limits to the media.

The decision adds another layer of intrigue around Barrett’s coaching future.

Canterbury officials will hold emergency talks on Monday amid speculation an increasing number of directors hope Trent Barrett resigns before he is sacked.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal there is unrest inside the Bulldogs boardroom with directors having lost confidence in Barrett’s ability to drag the club from the NRL cellar.

If Barrett opts to fight to save his job, he could still be dumped by as early as Wednesday.

Canterbury directors are feeling the heat amid a fan-led campaign to have Barrett axed after 18 months in charge.

Chair John Khoury is expected to meet head of football Phil Gould early this week.

The all-powerful Canterbury League Club board has already thrown its considerable support behind whatever decision the football club board reach on Barrett.

Barrett’s position on Sunday night was described by insiders as “untenable.”

He could survive and coach Canterbury in Friday night’s derby against Wests Tigers at Leichhardt Oval but several directors feel their coach looks “beaten” in his role.

The breaking point appears to have been Friday night’s loss to Newcastle at Suncorp Stadium.

If Barrett departs, Canterbury may name a replacement coach who would start in 2023 while appointing caretaker coach for the remainder of this season.

Canterbury operates under a structure where board members are elected every two years by the members. A vocal minority of those members have begun venting over the club’s efforts this season - they are running stone motherless last, having averaged less than 10 points a game through the opening 10 games.

Barrett looked devoid of answers after his side’s loss to the Knights and rival clubs reported a sombre mood among Canterbury directors at the team hotel in Brisbane immediately following the game.

Barrett is in the line of fire given he has won only five of his 34 games in charge since taking over at the start of last season.

Gould has been an outspoken supporter of Barrett but the coach’s future may be out of his hands if the board decides the time has come for change.

He could have few arguments given results during his tenure. Barrett inherited an average squad last season but the Bulldogs have been strengthened with the addition of Matt Burton, Tevita Pangai, Brent Naden, Matt Dufty, Paul Vaughan, Braidon Burns and Josh Addo-Carr. The club is already looking to part ways with Dufty and Vaughan while Pengai has also been discussed by rival clubs.

Club sponsors will also meet for one of their semi-regular catch ups and while Barrett has not been on the agenda so far, the coach’s future at Belmore is likely to be a hot topic when the group get together later this week.
Results have barely improved and there are genuine fears that Burton may head to market on November 1 rather than extend his deal with the Bulldogs.

That said, there is hope for next season as Reed Mahoney, Ryan Sutton and Viliame Kikau prepare to join the club. Rumours also persist that Gould has an interest in signing Payne Haas despite suggestions that he is out of their reach.

The Bulldogs are unlikely to have any problem finding a new coach if they do decide to move on from Barrett. Penrith assistant Cameron Ciraldo is off contract at the end of the year and likely to be their priority but there is no shortage of options should he decide to bide his time and wait for a more attractive opportunity.

Paul Green and Shane Flanagan have won premiership and crave another opportunity. Gould is a fan of Tigers coach Michael Maguire. Kristian Woolf has been a raging success at St Helens while Steve Price has returned as an assistant at Cronulla after a highly-successful stint in Super League.

Ben Hornby, Josh Hannay and Brett White are also highly-regarded assistants at South Sydney, Cronulla and Canberra respectively
