The Parramatta Eels have long been Canterbury's main rivals, while South Sydney and the Roosters have shared a common disdain that dates back more than a century.
But over the past 10 years, as the Bulldogs and Rabbitohs have evolved into Sydney's super clubs, a new modern-day rivalry has been formed that has the potential to supersede the animosity shared with their respective arch enemies.

It's no disrespect to the Roosters, who arguably remain the on-field benchmark, but off the field South Sydney are far more concerned with the happenings in Belmore than Bondi, while Bulldogs boss Raelene Castle says the club now view the Bunnies like they did the Eels in the 80's.

There is plenty of respect between the two clubs, who often work together at management level to grow their respective clubs, but there remains a strong level of direct competitiveness between the two clubs who call ANZ Stadium home.
South Sydney claimed bragging rights and the status as Sydney's rugby league powerhouse with a drought-breaking 30-6 victory against the Bulldogs in last year's grand final.

But perhaps the moment which this blossoming rivalry climaxed came in chaotic and controversial scenes at the Olympic venue just over four months ago.

Tempers frayed, emotions boiled over and rugby league was left to nurse another black eye as the rapidly-growing feud between the Bulldogs and Rabbitohs entered another chapter.
After the match there were a minority of fans who tarnished the reputation the family club had worked so hard to clean up over the past decade, throwing projectiles and inciting violence on their way out of the ground after a controversial refereeing decision saw the Bulldogs surrender victory in the dying seconds.
While South Sydney left with the two points, Rabbitohs officials and players were angry with James Graham taking out and injuring their star playmaker Adam Reynolds with the charge-down that provided the Rabbitohs with the penalty goal to snatch victory.
South Sydney fans were critical of the behaviour of the Bulldogs fans, which didn't sit well with the Canterbury hierarchy who bit their tongues despite wanting to remind them of two previous incidents involving South Sydney fans and projectiles aimed at referees.
There's also the incident that happened behind closed doors after last year's grand final loss, when Castle and Bulldogs chairman Ray Dib attempted to escort NRL chief executive Dave Smith, ARLC boss John Grant and head of football Todd Greenberg into the South Sydney sheds to congratulate the Bunnies on their victory.
They were denied entry by the South Sydney doorman, who was under strict instruction not to let anyone in because co-owner Russell Crowe was inside.
Despite waiting an extended period for a South Sydney official to allow them in, Dib and Castle never made it inside, with former chief executive Shane Richardson coming to the door to greet the Bulldogs duo as Greenberg, Smith and Grant ventured inside the change rooms.
There's also tension between the Bulldogs, who ironically raised $100,000 to help South Sydney regain entry back into the competition in the early 2000s, and the Rabbitohs over the power struggle between the NRL and its clubs.
The Bulldogs have aligned themselves with the Sydney Roosters and Penrith Panthers and have made no secret of their dismay over the way the NRL operates - feelings they thought were reciprocated by South Sydney.
However, the Rabbitohs have aligned themselves with the NRL, while their chairman Nick Pappas also infuriated Bulldogs officials after Canterbury's loss to Cronulla in round 20 when he tweeted "Much-hyped Belmore 'atmosphere' couldn't deliver a great spectacle. Or a home side win."
While there are plenty of incidents that have caused tension in recent years, there's also a mutual respect between the two clubs that is typified in the relationship between Castle and new South Sydney boss John Lee.
"Taking over here at the club here from 'Richo', one of the first phone calls I received was from Raelene Castle," Lee said.

"She welcomed me to the game and suggested we meet up and have a good Chinese feed out at the Leagues Club as soon as I got my feet under the desk. I think it's very true that on field there's amazing rivalry between not only the players but coaches. They're both strong clubs where success is expected. Off field what has been very consistent is the level of professionalism of the boards of both clubs have in ensuring clubs are well run and operate efficiently.

"There's an old political term, 'so much more that unites us than divides us'. If I was to use a geopolitical analogy, from afar people think the Rabbitohs and Bulldogs are like America and Russia. We think Bulldogs are our ally and more like Britain than Russia."
South Sydney's move from the Sydney Football Stadium to ANZ Stadium in 2006 has not only seen their annual net profit from ticket sales increase from $36,000 in 2005 to in excess of $2 million a decade later - but also a shift in perspective at management level.
The Rabbitohs now have a greater focus on western Sydney that has resulted in a significant growth in membership, partly in areas that have long been regarded Canterbury territory, with almost 60 per cent of South Sydney members living in the inner west and greater western Sydney.
But the Bulldogs and Rabbitohs share more than just the same stadium, a love for English forwards and a training base at their respective spiritual homes.
"As far as the back office goes we have a normal respect for each other and recognise that working together we can grow a bigger rivalry. We talk and share about everything except football, we never ever talk about our football teams," Castle said.
"I'm surprised clubs don't work together more off field because in reality we don't really compete. The benefits of our relationship is evident in us working together to ensure ANZ Stadium gets the next level of investment.
"It's a massive rivalry on the field, there's a really big rivalry between our fan base and that's what creates dynasties and great football results, passion and sellout crowds. We work together to develop that."

Souths have their head in the clouds.
We have our feet on the ground.

Their inevitable collapse from greatness will be very enjoyable.

Isn't it funny how the fans reportedly are the only ones capable of tarnishing the game of Rugby League but the Refs and overly paid administration never do!!!

We were the only club who backed them to come back into the NRL.

Reading that article, it comes across like we are the rabbits little biatch
We are nobody's biatch, let alone the rabbits,

It's time at corporate level we stop letting them disrespect us and walk all over us,

I may be different to others in that I don't have an undying hatred for Souths. Whilst I live beating them I have a certain amount of respect for them with regards to where they've come from and what they've been through. The fact that they seem to get every leg up from the NRL is starting to change that though.

They are still a long way off the absolute hatred I feel for the Roosters. If there was armed button that I could push and wipe the whole Roosters club I have no doubt I'd happ....tap tap tap tap tap tap

The Bulldogs where front and centre in supporting their fight to get back in the NRL........ they go on to **** us at every turn (they don't make the refs make bad calls, but they sure work hard to put the boot in after the event. Their little bitch tweet tonight was just the latest in quite a few before). The Rooster rivalry is manufactured. The Eels one was back in the 80's when the Eels mattered.

Souths I just don't like at this point. Our club would be stupid to keep feeding the mouth that bites it...... sometimes you just have to put that rabid little bastard down.

No issue with them wanting to stand on their own, and don't expect them to have special love for the Bulldogs...... but talking up injuries earlier this year before a hearing to get the ban given bigger, talking up the fans bad behaviour, being down right rude when our leadership wanted to say congrats last year, teasing a loss at Belmore, trying to say something was off with Graham coming back tonight......... these are some low life assholes of the highest order, can't help but hope Inglis is done for the year and they crash and burn hard from here on out myself.

Regardless of if we helped them before or not, the senior people at Souths have been some cocky bastards (and on the field, Goodwin, get the chip off your shoulder....... yes, you where let go because your not good enough, enjoy the ring, right place, right time and all that....... don't kid yourself, your still not very good)

I lost all respect for michael 'maggot' maguire after that, it was a blatant attempt to influence the media and judiciary and **** our season.

I haven't seen a lower act from a coach since the ARL limbo championship of 1982.

Oh yes and I see that the all caring, all responsible coach Dr Michael Maguire has asked for an investigation into the fact that James Graham returned to the field last night. James was stunned by an elbow to the head from one of the Bunnies players whilst making a tackle ( Tim Grant I believe) and did indeed take a moment to get up from the ground. He ran off the field and up the tunnel with the trainer after being told to leave by the referee for a concussion test. Returned to the field after his allotted test time and practically sprinted to the middle of the field and continued. Obviously cleared by medical staff to return. It beggars belief that Maguire can come out and say this after some of his less than spectacular efforts (with smelling salts) Reynolds on at least three other occasions where he stayed down for minutes and wobbled around like a baby learning to walk. No action was taken against Souths for those incidents. I actually commented on this last night and said that they would no doubt question the decision for him to return. Even the commentators said he was okay just stunned. I will be very disappointed if the matter is taken any further.

Now all the pundits are saying that Souths were behind the eight ball with Keary and Luke out, but we had Tolman, Lichhaa, Reynolds missing and lost Timmy Browne early in the game and played with a three man bench rotation. Not sure about Tim's injury but he had a massive shiner on his cheek. Souths chose to play both Walker and Sutton when they were under severe doubt and McInnes when he was underdone not having played a game in a few weeks, that was in their control no one else's. Are they for real, actually intimating that we were not in any way disadvantaged and were in a lot better position with our players out than Souths were.

We stood up big time to those bully boys last night and some of the hits put on by the boys were absolutely brutal. Jarad Maxwell did his best once again with a couple of astoundingly bad decisions, the first when he ruled Moz put his foot over the dead ball line when the replays clearly showed he did not: (In the first half at about the 26th minutes Maxwell awards a goal line drop to get yet another set of six for Souths and Inglis races in to let him know that he had to. Well after a replay that decision rightfully was overturned by the video referee however the later one by Moz was not. Ample opportunity as the replays went on for two minutes and were clear that he did not go dead. If they can do one they can do the other or not at all.) South's scored off the next set of six after a restart of the tackle count. They scored their last try where the player clearly grounded the ball 6 inches short of the line; no referral for that one straight away he signalled try. Witnessed at least three cannonball tackles by Souths last night that went unpunished and don't even get me started on the back to back penalties that Souths got in the last ten minutes of the first half to gift them a mountain of possession right on our goal line. Still though we held firm and went to the break 22-0.

Damien Cook had a blinder last night and I am so glad that Des did start with him. Love the guy to death and although his time in first grade has been confined to four games over four years he stood up when it counted and will be a capable replacement in our run to the semis ( and I hope further)

Loved the Jimmy comment to Maxwell who told him that the side (Canterbury) was giving too many penalties away. Jimmy says that we are not giving the penalties you are. Lol.

It was fantastic to be able to give it to Souths and their fans. The batteries in the Burrow microphones must have been flat or completely missing because we out cheered and outlasted them. I know it is only one game in the greater scheme of things but it was a game that meant so much to the players, the fans and us as a club. The boys looked extremely focussed from the get go and I loved the way they walked onto the field with a purpose.

Have no idea what time the game started but the usual South's wankfest preceded it . Five minutes; yes a period of five minutes of CGI player introductions with fire and brimstone for Souths after a quick flash of our team list on the screen and that sh@t Glory Glory song, on and on. Well, we had the last laugh with their fans making a very quick and quiet exit from the ground while we waited around to applaud and cheer our team fro their efforts.

Our crowd was loud and proud last night and easily outnumbered and out enthused the Pride of the League. 35000+ members.. where were they all?

Last night was last night and we still have two games ahead of us which we need to approach with the same enthusiasm and toughness. I am feeling better about our chances but am not counting our chickens before they are hatched.
