Rival clubs are circling Brisbane Broncos young gun Tom Dearden with the Melbourne Storm headlining a list of teams interested in the emerging teenage halfback.
Dearden, 19, was rushed into the NRL last season as the Broncos youngest-ever halfback aged 18 years and 50 days and looked an immense talent in five NRL appearances.
The Broncos had trumpeted Dearden as the club’s long-term No.7 solution and gave Kodi Nikorima a mid-season release to fast-track his pathway into the NRL.
But Dearden sustained a syndesmosis injury playing against the Gold Coast and required ankle surgery ruling him out for the rest of the season.
Brisbane then opted to sign out-of-favour Melbourne Storm halfback Brodie Croft and elevate the No.7 straight into the club’s leadership group at the end of last season.
Croft started the new season in strong form but since the relaunch after the COVID-19 shutdown has struggled to adapt to the new six again rule behind a pop gun forward pack.
Good judges rate Dearden as a future representative halfback with the rookie No.7 named the Australian Schoolboys player of the tour in 2018.
The news will have the Broncos sweating bullets after the 59-0 debacle against back-to-back premiers Sydney Roosters and the blowtorch post mortem which has followed
Dearden played Queensland under 16s and Queensland under 18s and was rated so highly by the Broncos the club allowed him to specifically focus on bulking-up in the off-season prior to his NRL debut last year.
With Croft now being the Broncos starting halfback rival NRL clubs have begun eyeing off the Brisbane no.7 who cut his teeth playing in Mackay.
Dearden is signed until the end of 2021 but rival clubs are free to make a play for him from November 1.
The Melbourne Storm are currently monitoring the situation with Jahrome Hughes ruled out for up to three weeks with a broken hand.
The Storm named Ryley Jacks in the no.7 jumper to meet Newcastle on Super Saturday on Fox League at 5.30pm.
The Storm aren’t the only club closely monitoring the Dearden situation.
