The Mitsubishi Electric Bulldogs will be making a bold statement when they run out against the Brisbane Broncos in round 14 of the NRL Premiership – they’ll be wearing pink socks!
In an effort to increase awareness of breast cancer and to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, the Bulldogs team will be playing in pink and white Nike socks instead of the usual blue and white. The socks will then be signed by the relevant player and auctioned off with proceeds going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s research program.
The wearing of the pink socks by the players coincides with the third annual “Harvey Norman Bulldogs Women In A League of Their Own” dinner which will be held on the same night at Telstra Stadium. The dinner, which is open to the public and corporate sector, celebrates the contribution women make to rugby league, from grass roots level to the elite level of the NRL. The National Breast Cancer Foundation is also the Bulldogs’ charity partner for this function.
Bulldogs fullback Luke Patten said, “When the idea was floated about wearing the pink socks as a way to raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation there was no hesitation from any of the players. To be honest, if we had to wear a whole pink outfit nobody would flinch because it’s such a good cause.”
“I was staggered by the statistic that breast cancer will inflict one in eight women in Australia by the age of 85. And it seems almost everybody has been touched by this disease through friends or family who have battled the illness. If this small gesture helps to raise awareness and much needed funds then it’s a good thing.”
Bulldogs CEO Malcolm Noad commented, “I hope our fans come out in droves to the game on Friday, June 15 as a visible sign of support for this cause, but more importantly they go to www.graysonline.com.au after the game and take part in the online auction for these truly one of a kind memorabilia items.”
The National Breast Cancer Foundation was established 13 years ago and in that time has funded over 153 research projects, totaling $26.8 million, resulting in some significant discoveries.
Tickets for the “Harvey Norman Bulldogs Women In A League of Their Own” dinner are $180 and can be purchased through the Bulldogs office at Belmore Sports Ground, via phone on 02 9789 2922 or download a booking form HERE.
Bidding on www.graysonline.com.au for the individually signed Bulldogs players pink socks will open after the Bulldogs v Broncos game on Friday, June 15 has finished.
