THE Canterbury-Bulldogs are seeking an urgent meeting with Premier Mike Baird to discuss the Belmore Sports Ground upgrade as the funding deadline approaches.
The State Government needs to provide $2.5million for the project this month before the Federal Government withdraws the $4million it has committed.
The upgrade would transform the ground into a sports and multicutural arts precinct that would bring benefits to the wider community, according to the club.
“The business case is done and we are awaiting a time to meet with Mr Baird,” Bulldogs chief executive Raelene Castle said.
“We’re certainly confident we have a business case to show the State Government return in their investment through a community perspective.
“As well as that, I think we proved during grand final week that the Bulldogs have the capability to bring the community together and the community deserves this.”
Last year The Express successfully campaigned for the Federal Government to commit $4 million to the Sydney Multicultural Arts and Sports Precinct project.
The $10million project at Belmore Sports Ground comprises two new grandstands with capacity for 1700, dedicated performance and visual arts spaces and a 2km walkway linking the facility to the train station.
The Bulldogs have committed $1million to the project, as well as $1.5million from Canterbury Council and $1million from Sydney Olympic FC.
A business case was submitted to NSW Sports Minister Stuart Ayres earlier this year but was met with a request for more detailed information.
