Brisbane has reportedly finalised a new deal with star playmaker Adam Reynolds with the club taking advantage of a sly loophole.

Adam Reynolds has signed a one-year contract extension to remain with the Broncos through to the end of the 2025 NRL season.

As first reported by News Corp, the star halfback’s new deal will see him finish his career at the age of 35 with the Broncos desperately hoping to go one better in 2024 after losing to the Panthers in the 2023 Grand Final.

The playmaker finishes his three-year-deal with the Broncos at the end of 2024 — but has ignored any lure to leave Brisbane by re-signing ahead of the club’s Las Vegas season opener against the Roosters.

Having already secured Ezra Mam to a blockbuster, long-term deal, the Broncos only have Reece Walsh left to lock down.

The star fullback is contracted with Brisbane until the end of 2025, but is due for a huge pay rise following his blistering 2023 season.

Broncos legend Corey Parker in November called for the club to make Walsh the highest paid player in the club’s history. With Payne Haas reportedly earning $1m per-season under his new deal, there is a push for Walsh to be handed a $1.1 million-per year deal.

The Broncos only have one more signing to secure.
Extending Reynolds to the end of 2025 will give Walsh more incentive to remain with the club — and it is expected that the Broncos will shift Reynolds into a coaching role at the end of his playing career.

It was reported in November the Broncos and Reynolds’ management were in discussions about a 12-month extension — which came with indicators Reynolds will stick around after he hangs up the boots.

According to News Corp, Reynolds was willing to take a pay cut on the $800,000 salary he will earn in 2024 in order to help the club secure Walsh and Mam.

The veteran halfback played a key role in guiding the Broncos to the grand final, while he has been widely praised for his leadership of the club’s array of young talent including Walsh and Mam.

Crucially, Reynolds is expected to move into a coaching position at the club once he retires from playing.

Under NRL rules, a percentage of Reynolds’ salary in his final year would not count towards the club’s cap.

.. gotta love it when a player sacrifices their 800k per year pay packet to keep other players at the club! Noone bats an eyelid.

In Lockyer's last year, he was on 250k on the Bronco's cap but had 23 third party agreements. I imagine Reynolds would qualify for the veterans allowance,if it's not already been used, plus have access to plenty of TPAs too.

Wait for it.

'Sly Loophole' is Reynolds is willing to take a paycut, to 'keep' Reece Walsh.

I know, it's never happened at other clubs before. :tearsofjoy:

Haha that wasn’t the loophole. It said a percentage wouldn’t count towards the cap. I don’t get it, as it’s not long serving club member, 3rd party is seperate to cap. As dogmatic said though some veterans allowance maybe.
