Luke Patten was a favourite of mine but the fullback position has changed in so many ways since he played and I doubt he would be good at teaching much except the basics.
Lol what a load of shit. By that logic no one over the age of 35 could transition into specialist position coach.

Patten would be one bloke who could turn his hand to working with fullbacks effectively if he wanted to. Stellar career in the position followed by studying the game in the decade post-retirement.

Talk to the general every few weeks as he is a rep for Soda Stream and works for the nrl still.Top bloke he is and what a dogs ledgend. He talks of the unsung heroes like Adam Perry and Grimaldi etc that never got the accolades of mason ,shifty amd sonny etc.Humble guy.He calls into dogs training now and then as mates with Baz from Steeler days but doesnt have much input but his presence as ex player .one of the best dogs fullbacks ever .great club man.

Once again you show your basic footy knowledge. If you think fullbacks and hookers haven’t evolved in the last decade you are kidding yourself.

Lol and where did I dispute that? I’m disputing your opinion that you can’t effectively coach either of those positions unless you’ve played there in the past 5-10 years.

Reserve grade coach is former DUAL Dally M winner & fullback Mick Potter. No need for anybody else. Potter was better.

Patten was a basic and reliable fullback but a limited one especially in today’s game so he’s limited in what he can teach. I’m talking specifically about Patten not everyone.

Th problem with Pattens was he had no heart at all, and it was paved over by being part of a golden age of Bulldog teams.

don’t get me wrong, he was a skilful good player. But it’s funny how he just ‘tripped’ at the line so much to avoid getting hurt.
If he was in the modern team he would be considered a fraud (he isn’t).
he’s probably similar to Meaney in a lot of ways

I dont think you could question his commitment or heart mate ,He was in a good era yes and bled blue n white for the club .Meaney has nothing on the General ,not even close .He was one of the unluckiest players to ever not don an Australian Jersey due to the era and other fullback competition .Consistently a threat ,try scorer and reliable .

Not sure about his mentoring ability or whether he would be a good coach in todays game.

Our fb could look at how he backed up the ball carrier. Something no one seems able to do presently in our team no matter what position they play.

Be so good when we finally get back to executing a gameplan.

Just enjoy his tries.

So the bloke who the Panthers hired to work closely with their halves who’s played no higher than reserve grade 15 years ago must be completely useless to coach in the NRL today under your exact logic;
- wasn’t an elite player
- didn’t play within the past 5-10 years

No idea it’s irrelevant to what I’m talking about as I made it pretty clear is was referring to only Patten but you seem to have trouble comprehending that.

We've got Mick Potter
This. 2 times dally m winner. Would be a good fullback in today’s game with his kicking skills and ball playing ability.

But if we were going to hire a fullback coach the call would have to go out to Lockyer or slater. Fair enough never played a game for us. But their knowledge of the position and skill set would be more suited to today’s game, rather then a fullback that mostly backed up his halves and forwards.

He's an NRL official now. He can't coach as it would be a conflict of interest.
