JAMAL Idris's future is poised to be decided on his roots, with Canterbury seeking Federal Government support to offer him a role as an indigenous ambassador.

The Bulldogs face a growing challenge to keep Idris against massive offers from Newcastle and Gold Coast, both of which are likely to exceed what the Belmore club can currently afford under its salary cap.

Both suitors also operate in-house indigenous community schemes and have spoken to Idris about additional income he could derive from becoming the face of their programs.

As revealed by The Daily Telegraph, Idris travelled to Newcastle last Tuesday for a three-hour tour of the club's facilities with Knights coach Rick Stone and recruitment manager Keith Onslow.

Newcastle are understood to have made Idris a rich offer several weeks before his visit, which could be revised upwards should billionaire mining magnate Nathan Tinkler gain control of the club at next Thursday night's extraordinary general meeting.

Gold Coast are also believed to be extremely close to finalising their offer, which could exceed $400,000 a year.

Having returned in top condition from his best pre-season, Idris is now the hottest property on the NRL market after posting back-to-back individual victories over Australian centre pairing Chris Lawrence and Greg Inglis to open the premiership.

But with his off-field manoeuvres generating as much interest as his form on the paddock, the 20-year-old was again reluctant to speak publicly at yesterday's Bulldogs recovery session.

His manager Sam Ayoub said the player's future would remain clouded until the Bulldogs make an offer.

"It's hard for Jamal to consider his position until the Bulldogs get something to us," Ayoub said.

Bulldogs CEO Todd Greenberg again reiterated his desire to make Idris a "one- club player" at Belmore.

"Jamal has made it really clear to me that he wants to remain at the Bulldogs," Greenberg said last night. "And I've made it clear to him that we see him as a one-club player. Our challenge is to make sure we come up with a commercial offer to make that happen."

A Bulldogs insider said he expected the club's offer to be finalised within "the next few weeks".

To compete with the Knights and Titans, Canterbury officials are working hard behind the scenes to secure third-party sponsors - including an indigenous role with the Federal Government.

Similar strategies proved integral in keeping Johnathan Thurston at the Cowboys and Inglis at the Storm, before the star three-quarter was forced to leave the club in the wake of last year's salary cap scandal.

"We know both the Knights and Titans have indigenous programs, so we've been talking to the Government about something for Jamal in that regard," the insider said.

Another ace up the Bulldogs' sleeve could be around $270,000 that has been freed up over the next two years by the termination of prop Ryan Tandy's contract last Friday.
