Exhibit A that college football teams do need exhibition games?

In Kent State’s season opener against Towson, both teams committed stupendously boneheaded acts on the same play. Late in the first half, the Golden Flashes were forced to punt. The ball became live after it grazed the Tigers return man, whereupon Kent State sophomore Andre Parker eagerly scooped up the pigskin inside the Towson 10-yard line … and proceeded to run toward his own end of the field.

Parker advanced the ball 58 yards before he was driven out of bounds by a pair of Tigers, who apparently did not realize that if they had let Parker go, their team would’ve scored a safety.

Here’s the unbelievable video evidence:

We had a kid who used to do that in the under 6's =P .... most of the time
the coach stopped him ... but he gave up when he did it on the final game of
the year... so the kid ran and scored a try ... at the wrong end.....

The ref was confused....thinking what to do????????
the coach said... "its a drop out mate"
common sense prevailed...drop out it was =P

Why did the opposing side tackle him? They should have let him run into his own in zone !!! LOL

I watch a bit of grid iron but am not up with the rules....
But can you actually pick up a kick that bounces when
your on the offensive team and run with the ball ???
It wasn't a fumble .... So the ball would have gone
back to where he picked it up....

Still... It was pretty stupid......

I remember Robin Thorne playing the ball the wrong
direction after a big hit =(

I've followed the game for years - both pros and college. No, you can't just recover your own kick downfield (from a punt). If you touch the ball before the other side does, then its simply classed dead and their start their set from where you touched it. In this case, however, it is officially afensive fumble and hence a completely live ball since it bounces up and brushes against the receiving team. By having the kick bounce into him but not securing the ball, he officially fumbled it back to the kicking team.
