Matty Johns: The day Steve Folkes sprung nasty surprise on Bulldogs players before golf trip
NRL PREMIERSHIP

Ben Roberts jokes with premiership winning Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes.Source: News Limited
STEVE Folkes’ toughness and no-fear attitude as a player defined his 269 games and four premierships as a Canterbury player.

And it was those same traits that defined his coaching career at the Bulldogs which reaped the 2004 NRL title.

The players he coached at the kennel and at the Jillaroos will remember the man who could keep up with any of them in any training drill, long after his own retirement from the game. Folkes died suddenly on Tuesday of a suspected heart attack.

Matty Johns recalls one story that perhaps sums up Folkes’ ruthless obsession with fitness and hard work.

It was the day he sprung a surprise road ride on his unsuspecting players, who had prepared for a relaxing weekend of golf and beers.

TRIBUTES: ‘Thought he would live forever. He was a machine’

Premiership winning Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes.Source: Getty Images

“Some of the training sessions go down in legend. The Bulldogs players will tell stories,” Johns told Triple M’s Grill Team.

“Often the Bulldogs go up to the Hunter Valley at Cessnock there and they have a few drinks, play some golf and just relax, a bit of bonding.

“They turn up one Friday and they’re going to Cypress Lakes for the weekend, he said just turn up, bring your golf bags, bring your training gear and we might do a bit of training.

“So they arrive at Belmore Oval and Folkesy says go into the sheds, grab your bikes, strap some bananas and some water to your back, we’re riding to Cessnock.

“It’s 220 ks.

“The whole squad rode up the highway to Newcastle. Some of the boys could hardly ride a bike, it must have taken them two days.”

And while the brutal surprise training session may sound tough on the players, Johns explained it was moments like those that helped establish the club’s famous culture, and contributed to their 2004 premiership.

“That was part of that Bulldogs culture, when you played them you knew you were going to get bashed up and you knew you had to play for the full 80 minutes or they were going to beat you,” Johns said.

“Steve Folkes had the ability to push his own traits onto his players and onto his teams.

“His toughness, his perseverance ... Folkesy’s teams were always fighting to the siren, they were incredibly hard to beat.”

Johns remembers playing against the Folkes-trained Bulldogs during the late 1990s and early 2000s.

He admits they were some of the toughest games of his rugby league career.

“You might remember the run they had in his first coaching year in 1998. We played them the second week of the finals at Allianz Stadium, we led them by 16 points just before half time, and they beat us in extra time, they just wore us down,” Johns recalled of his time with Newcastle.

“The week after that they played Parramatta, Parra led them 18-2 with little time left and they beat Parramatta in extra time.

“They were fit, tough, and relentless. They were Steve Folkes, that’s who he was.”

Distance is not the problem for me because I would have travelled to be there but unfortunately I will be unable to attend due to work commitments. I would love to be at our spiritual home to say farewell to a legend of the game and the club. I will certainly be thinking of him come 3pm Monday. The outpouring of well wishes for "Folksey" has been overwhelming from all parts of the game and certainly no less than he deserves. A champion bloke who played the game with a wonderful work ethic. It should be remembered that when he started playing at the Dogs he was a five eighth but was moved to the second row due to his potency in regards to tackling.

He went to school in my old stamping ground of Punchbowl - Punchbowl Boys High- where he was Captain of the school and was an accomplished union player for their school side. Was there at the same time as two of my brothers and my Mum used to wash jerseys for the school footy side in our bathtub.

If anyone from the kennel attends it would be wonderful to hear a report.

I'm going to go, taking afternoon off work and going alone..
He deserves as many fans there as we can get. He gave so much to our club, and the respect I have for his man without ever meeting him personally is amazing.

I wish I could get 100 people to come with me but I know work commitments will hold many back..

I'm so happy the club has honoured him like this.

Bulldogs greats lead social media tributes for Folkes

Almost 24 hours after his passing, social media tributes were still flowing after the loss of Canterbury Bulldogs great Steve Folkes as former players from the Bulldogs 2004 premiership winning side as well as other staffers and players remembered the influential Bulldogs figure.

The likes of Steve Price, Hazem El Masri, Braith Anasta and other Bulldogs players from the 2004 premiership-winning side made all paid tribute, all of whom spoke highly of their now former coach.

"I played most of my career with Steve as my coach and what he taught me was the true Bulldogs, never give up attitude," said El-Masri.

A much-loved and much-revered player and coach, the sheer magnitude of the tributes coming his way are a testament to the player, coach and man that he was.

Steve Mortimer, a fellow club legend who played alongside Folkes for many years, was devastated at the news of Folkes passing.

"Shocked and saddened at the news. Folksy was a good man and one of our Bulldogs greats. He always played above his weight. My thoughts are with his family at this time."

Paul Langmack, a former team-mate of Steve Folkes, spoke highly of him on Players Voice.

He may have only been small, but he had great technique. And he was fearless. He’d set his feet and drive into the bloke carrying the ball, aiming around the ribs or straight across the chest.

I was hesitant at first but I’m going take the arvo off work and attend. Work is always going to be there.

This will be my only chance to properly farewell the legend and last coach to take us to the crown.
