Sssshhhh ..... *puts hand to ear* .... can you hear it ?

BDGS is coming :becky:
hahaha mate, how's ya going?

I have been dissapointed by this bid, while i support the WA Reds and the CC Bears for inclusion into the NRL for 2013 i was really excited to hear about this bid. It has so much potential, unfortunately many people have already spoken out against this bid, Bennett, Thurston and the other 2 QLD bids Ipswich and CQ.

I spoke to a mate last night who told me a bit a few things about this bid, i can't reveal anything but its a disappointing bid.

Second Brisbane team should not play at Suncorp, they should play at QE2 or whatever it's called, whats the point of having a second team if they play out of the same arena? You're not going to pick up any new fans if you have to go to the same venue to watch them.

Punting agency a sure-fire bet to be part of bid

SPORTS gambling firm Centrebet hopes to revolutionise the relationship between betting agencies and sport by becoming a part-owner of a new NRL club in Brisbane.

The consortium behind the Brisbane bid - led by Craig Davison, a prominent member of the Thoroughbreds group of Queensland businessmen who support the Broncos - want Centrebet to come on board not only as a sponsor but as a major partner in the club if they gain an NRL licence. The vision for a second Brisbane team, the plans for which were revealed by the Herald last week, is to become ''the Manchester United of rugby league''.

Neil Evans, a former television journalist who is Centrebet's public relations and media director, was approached before Christmas about the company joining the bid team and then met Davison and his colleagues Nicholas Livermore and Bill Rae at a gathering at a Southport hotel on the Magic Millions race day, January 15.

A financial commitment has yet to be made but Evans is likely to be at the table in Sydney on Monday when Davison, Livermore and Rae meet NRL chief executive David Gallop to discuss expansion, and an official partnership could be in place as soon as next week.

Among several proposals put to the consortium by Evans as part of Centrebet's part-ownership is the installation of a private betting lounge at the new franchise's leagues club, tipped to be at Davies Park in Brisbane's West End if they get the green light as an expansion club.

''The plan is to be a major partner in a new rugby league club,'' Evans said. ''Potentially, it will be the biggest rugby league derby the planet has ever seen.

''We're still working through it but obviously I'm confident we'll reach an agreement. We want to revolutionise the relationship between a betting partner and a major rugby league club.''

The alliance between the three businessmen behind the Brisbane bid and Centrebet is the most significant development in a recent wave of links between gambling agencies and the NRL. Centrebet, a publicly listed company in which veteran bookmaker Con Kafataris is the main shareholder, has been the primary player, forming a landmark naming-rights stadium deal with Penrith and a jersey association with Manly.

Meanwhile, South Sydney last week signed a three-year corporate partnership with Star City, placing the casino's logo on the front of the Rabbitohs' jumper, and Melbourne have named Crown Casino as their new main sponsor.

The move by Centrebet towards club ownership is evidence of the boom in rugby league betting, Evans said. ''What we've said and done in rugby league in the last couple of years has been reflected in our turnover,'' he said. ''Rugby league betting is massive. The other attraction is Queensland - it is obviously massive in league and probably about to be the epicentre. It might be the catalyst for [moving] the grand final up there one day. We want this to be the Manchester United of rugby league.''

Davison, who with other Thoroughbreds John Geaney and Tony Scanlon collectively own 25 per cent of the Broncos, has already spoken to Queensland Reds and Wallabies star Quade Cooper about making a switch of codes. They would play at Suncorp Stadium on alternate weekends to the Broncos.

Evans has been told that a decision on the introduction of two new NRL clubs could be made by October, with teams entering the competition in 2013 or 2014. However, it will be up to a new eight-member independent commission, which will run the game, to open the official tendering process and decide when, or whether, the NRL needs a 17th and 18th team.

The other six aspirants to be added to the competition are the Central Coast, Central Queensland, Ipswich, Perth, Wellington and Papua New Guinea.

The NRL in 2009 relaxed its stance on clubs having sponsorship agreements with betting companies and has its own deal with TAB Sportsbet for which it receives a 5 per cent cut of profit. The governing body has integrity agreements in place with all gambling agencies involved in the game, a policy it credits with being able to kickstart an investigation into irregular punting activity in the match between North Queensland and Canterbury last August.

I don't think betting agencies should be sponsoring clubs, let alone owning them.

If they do want another team from Queensland, it must be a club that exists already and has a fanbase.

I propose Logan. The Broncos are a plastic club with plastic fans, why add another one?

So what have they got now?
A major sponsor (Centrebet), a stadium (Suncorp), possible big name players players (said to be following Hodges, SBW, Cooper), a HUGE rivalry with the Broncos, which would easily see Suncorp packed out at least twice a season... anything else?

Disagree. I reckon they should get a completely new team, new faces, new name, new everything basically. This new brisbane team should be seen as a huge step forward by the NRL, they should do whatever they can to ensure that they earn as many millions from it as possible... and I don't think you can do that by bringing in an old club, tbh

And new fans? Bandwagoners? Another Titans-like club with no history and no soul.

This is why Rugby League is going down the **** pan. We need clubs with identity and history.

NRL rejects Centrebet plan

NRL chief executive David Gallop has all but ruled out Centrebet's hopes of becoming a part-owner of a new NRL club in Brisbane.

The consortium behind the bid has been in discussions with the betting agency about coming on board as a major partner should it succeed in earning an NRL licence.

However, Gallop indicated the league is likely to block the proposal.

''At first glance it's hard to see us approving that kind of arrangement,'' Gallop said. ''The steps we've taken in recent years have all been geared at getting greater control over gambling on the game. It's hard to imagine how you could separate the two interests.''

Gallop's comments are a blow to Centrebet's hopes of becoming involved beyond standard sponsorship status with the potential franchise. The betting agency recently earned the naming rights to the home ground of the Penrith Panthers.

''The second Brisbane bid and our potential involvement is all to do with what may potentially happen if and when the team arrives in a new competition,'' Centrebet spokesman Neil Evans said in response to Gallop's comments.

''We've been talking it up and we want to see rugby league expand in a sensational marketplace like Brisbane but it's [contingent on whether] this team is successful and if and when the NRL decides to expand. Who knows how the landscape will look in two years' time in terms of commercial relationships and partnerships. We're just planning and talking about something several hills in the future. There's a mixing-up of the potential for rugby league and the current hot potato that the whole thing is at the moment.''

The hot potato Evans referred to is the police investigation into a suspicious betting plunge on the Cowboys-Bulldogs match last August. The relationship between gambling and rugby league came further under the spotlight when Canterbury forward Ryan Tandy was charged with giving false and misleading evidence to the Crime Commission in relation to the matter.

Other recent developments include the South Sydney Rabbitohs signing a three-year corporate partnership with Star City Casino, while the Melbourne Storm unveiled Crown Casino as its major sponsor.

Craig Davison, the man behind the new Brisbane consortium, said the budding franchise would be financially sustainable even if the Centrebet ownership proposal was knocked back. ''With regards to Centrebet owning the club, that didn't come from us in terms of the directions we're heading,'' said Davison, a member of the Thoroughbreds group of Queensland businessmen who support the Brisbane Broncos.

''We've got a number of investors who are going to invest in the club and Centrebet are obviously keen to do that, '' Davison said.

''We'd seek NRL approval if that was to happen, but our direction has been [from] other private investors in Brisbane who are telling us they are keen to be involved.

''From Centrebet's [ownership] perspective you never say never and we were keen to get Centrebet as a sponsor, as well as others.''

NSW Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell had reservations about the proposed Centrebet-club partnership but said it was ultimately up to the NRL to make a call.

''I'm happy to be guided by David Gallop and his board, but the concern that we should have is to make sure that the advent of greater connections between any sport and gambling doesn't start to have an impact upon fair play and fair outcomes,'' O'Farrell said.

Sponsorship and ownership are two different things.

We don't want Gambling business owning any part of a club, that just asking for trouble.

This makes sense.

My 2 cents on the issue - Brisbane can use a 2nd NRL team, but not at the expense of an Ippy team.

Perth and Ippy/Central Coast would be my choices.

Gallop impressed with bid's enthusiasm

A second rugby league team in Brisbane is "on the cards" at some point in the future, NRL boss David Gallop has conceded.

Gallop on Monday met with members of a consortium proposing a second side in the Queensland capital if the league expands in 2013 to coincide with a new broadcast deal.

He said the bid was still in its early stages, but the energy of the group, led by former Thoroughbreds chairman Craig Davison, was undeniable.

The Thoroughbreds, a group of Brisbane businessmen, support Brisbane rivals the Broncos.

"It was useful to put a face to the media speculation," Gallop told AAP on Monday evening.

"Expansion is not on the agenda but we have said we expect to review that position in the later half of 2011.

"The strength of the game in Queensland is obvious to everyone but they, like any other potential bid, would need to demonstrate and that they have a sustainable business model and they bring a benefit to the entire competition.

"There's a bit of a way to go but we are happy to continue some dialogue with them.

"They're in the early days but you wouldn't knock their enthusiasm."

But Gallop's comments to reporters at an All Stars community event earlier on Monday would have been music to the consortium's ears.

"The strength of the game in Queensland, the population growth that's expected in South East Queensland, those are factors that would have to say that a second team out of Brisbane at some point would be on the cards," he said.

As well as the consortium from Brisbane, bids have been flagged by Ipswich, Central Queensland, Perth and NSW Central Coast plus, offshore, Wellington and Papua New Guinea.

The NRL has been insistent that any new team would need to grow the game's financial resources so current clubs were not adversely affected.

"It is exciting for the game that there are areas that want to be involved but we have to be careful to look at the impact on the existing 16 clubs and our existing players," Gallop said.

"We want to grow the pie for them and make sure that they're getting paid more money in the future.

"We would be looking at a sustainable business model but we'd also be looking at something that brought something to the table for everyone involved in the competition, something that's going to help the game grow."
