Brisbane to get second NRL team at the cost of another club

An NRL club could be cut in favour of a second Brisbane team.

Cronulla, Manly and the Gold Coast are at risk of being axed from the NRL as the Nine Network pushes for a new Brisbane rugby league team.
The broadcaster’s director of sport Tom Malone wants to axe one existing club to make way for a new club in the Queensland capital by 2023 with the final call to be made as early as December this year.

The newspaper reports that the Sharks, Sea Eagles and the Titans are the sides who are most at risk of the chop.

“That could come from another team being relocated there, or better still another club being discontinued and a new club established in Brisbane,” Malone told the Sunday Mail.

“In a perfect world you’d probably have one or two less teams.

“What clubs should go? I’m not going to get into that one. It’s a hard decision but probably one that needs to be made in the longer term interests of the game.”

Malone says he prefers the option of axing an existing club rather than adding another club because having 17 teams and a bye each week would increase costs without generating any “incremental revenue”.

Foxtel chief executive Patrick Delany supports a second team in the River City but doesn’t believe in axing an existing club.

“They love their rugby league in Brisbane and it seems a natural fit,” Mr Delany told the Sunday Mail.

“You get that intercity rivalry which enhances tribalism and that’s ultimately what we want.

“It’s all about generating more fans and bigger TV audiences. I don’t know if you’d get that real tribal traction with rugby league in Perth that you’d get in Brisbane

Well done to the cocksucker Greenberg from single handedly dismantling a professional sport into a TV product.

This guy is bending over and grabbing his ankles so the tv broadcasters can shove dollar Bill's in his asshole

The guy is a money hungry scumbag.... he needs to go. Does not care about the sport just only how much revenue it generates

Sounds like another “let’s float an idea, from someone not directly connected to the NRL, see what the public reaction is. If it tanks, never mention it again”

in 10 years time, the same 16 teams will still be running around TBH.

I reckon sharks are gone. St George cover both north and south of them.

I would choose the sharks. At least Manly are the only Northern Beaches team, Cronulla are one tiny suburb surrounded by St Merge territory.

I'm all for expansion into Brisbane but NOT at the expense of a Sydney team (which will be relocation).

I know that about 10-12 years ago there was talking of adding another team west of Brisbane, similar to what Penrith are in Sydney, and calling them Ipswich. This team currently exists in the QLD Cup and would be a team rivaling the Broncos. We all see how good the West Sydney Wanderers are in the A-League, so this team would do wonders to Brisbane. Relocating Manly, Sharks or Titans would mean that the team would still have that existence away from their heartland... pretty bad move IMO. Relocations do not work, simply start a new team up there.

And while we're at it, bring back the Bears as the North Sydney - Central Coast Bears covering both districts.

hopefully its the sharks and that puts a stop to that stupid fucking finger waving crap every time some arsehole attempts a goal kick

Gold Coast should be relocated and re-branded as the second Brisbane team

I posted about this scenario in rumours about 12-18 months ago. It was mentioned back then at an NRL function up in Qld. Obviously the NRL has decided to start going public about the idea.

Move The Storm. Their lower grade teams play in QLD anyway. They are successful on the park but they could be successful playing out of Brisbane.

The Mexicans will never really go for league anyway

get rid of the Warriors, they are just a nothing team and they aren't likely to have success in the foreseeable future. At least you can hate the other bottom teams and enjoy watching them lose
