Dean Pay's halves selection headache has quickly turned into a migraine after Jack Cogger and Lachlan Lewis were both injured in the space of one weekend.

Pay has opted to play Cogger instead of Lewis since Kieran Foran returned from an ankle injury last month but he may now be forced to pick a side without either of his young halves for the team's match against the Roosters next Sunday after Cogger suffered what appeared to be a nasty concussion just one day after Lewis injured his ankle.

Cogger was hit hard by Tariq Sims midway through the first half and struggled to find his feet in the moments which followed.

He stumbled back into the defensive line but was immediately dragged from the field to undergo a head injury assessment.

News soon filtered through that Cogger would not return to the field despite passing his HIA, leaving Kieran Foran to run an attack which continues to splutter.

"It didn't help (losing Cogger). Jack has obviously done a lot of our kicking and a lot of our organising," Pay said. "But we have to be better than that."

Lewis would have been the obvious choice to return to the team should Cogger not pass the necessary tests in the next six days but he was injured during the Bulldogs' Canterbury Cup game on Sunday.

"I think it's only a couple of weeks (that Lewis will miss)," Pay said. "It's not as bad as what we first thought. He will get scans but that's what we think."

Their playmaker shortage aside, Canterbury continue to disappoint their loyal fans.

Basic mistakes were once again the theme throughout the 36-12 defeat to the Dragons. Their afternoon was summed up by dropped balls from Aiden Tolman and Jeremy Marshall-King as they tried to mount a second-half comeback.

For every step Pay's side take forward, errors and a lack of polish in the opposition red zone are sending them hurtling back to reality.

"We go to training and the boys put in and their energy is good. We talk about it every week," Pay said.

"We talk about making sure that our performances are getting better and better each week but obviously tonight is not what we were looking for.

"If we just take the best part of our games and keep working as hard as we can to increase that, we can reduce the negative side of our game."

So we could be getting Nu Brown or even Wakeham in the halves against the Roosters....

What's the bet Pay puts JMK in the halves and brings Lichaa back for hooker.
Yeah you are probably right Pay will take the most boring and conservative approach possible.

Simply put Pay has too many reserve grade standard players playing in first grade. You can get away with one. Not two, three and four. Crichton, Montoya, Elliott are simply not good enough considering we've already got inexperienced blokes like Meaney, Marshall-King, Cogger/Lewis, playing key roles. These blokes should be playing reserve grade developing their game but have been thrown in the deep end because of our lack of talent and sub-par roster. We shouldn't have 3 out of 4 spine players as rookies or 2nd year players. It puts too much pressure on the rest of the team. The only good thing i noticed was JMK having a run out of dummy-half. Unfortunately Meaney was never around in support to capitalise...

Pay's comments every week prove how out of touch he is and that he honestly has no idea what he's doing. Every other club would have fired him by now. Please just get it over and done with and stop prolonging the torture of seeing him ruin the team any further.

Lichaa to Hooker, Tolman to half back and DWZ to the wing sounds like a Pay plan.
